Hope someone can help me out. Got a ShoBud LDG (around a 1976 build I'm guessing). The RKR lever is lowering the 9th string before the half stop engages. Played around with it a little underneath to no avail....I'm mechanically worthless.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance.

Connect the 9th string higher in both the bellcrank and the changer. If that's still not enough. You will need to slow the 2nd string lower down. Do this by connecting it lower in the bellcrank.
I don't want my 9th to start lowering till the 2nd string reaches the D note feel stop.
Hope this helps.

William,
From the factory the pull rods were installed #1 hole in the Lower Bar( Hole nearest the top of the guitar) And the #5 hole in the knee puller. The hole farthest from the knee lever shaft. Both #2 & #9 strings. Then the #2 string was tuned to standard "Eb" open. Then tuned to C# with the R/R lever activated with the knee lever stop screw under the guitar. Then the half stop was tuned with the Brass tuning collar.
The nylon tuning nuts need to have 1/16" clearance before coming in contact with either finger.
The #9 string should tune from there and will activate when the #2 string reaches the half stop.

Does the guitar have two-hole pullers or five-hole bell cranks? If it's a '76, wouldn't it have two-hole pullers? |

Thank you Bobby and Gene for responding...appreciate it. Brint, it has the two hole pullers.
I look at what the lever and feel stop do underneath for hours and just can't figure out how this damn thing does what it does.
Thanks again guys. |

I put up a couple photos if anyone can tell from them if something is out of whack.
Thanks.

So with the two-hole puller and the single lower hole in the changer, there's no option for moving the pull rod to a different hole at either end.
Is the point where the feel stop engages truly the in-tune D note? If the feel stop point is flat of the D, you could turn the threaded part of the barrel on the feel stop, screwing it closer to the swivel in the bell crank so it hits sooner in the lever travel.
Apart from that, there may be something that can be done by adjusting the lower return springs (the springs on all the changer fingers farthest from the guitar body). Here's a link to a discussion by Ricky Davis (a Sho-Bud-meister) about spring adjustments (third post):

EDIT: It doesn't look as though the lower return springs are adjustable on that guitar. But maybe removing the raise helper spring on the 2nd string (the spring closest to the body) would help? |

Screw the part on the barrel (that I labeled as screw) in or out to adjust the gap to be bigger or smaller. If you make the gap bigger then the lever will travel farther before engaging the half stop, and vice versa.... it sounds to me like you have to make the gap smaller.
Also it would be good to see the entire half stop assembly, as it might not be adjusted properly.... the collar might be loose, so there isn't enough tension on the spring that sets the feel.

That's what I'm talking about. I've got to learn how to draw on digital photos. |

i have the same steel and had a similar problem. here's the link that helped me address it:
http://bb.steelguitarforum.com/viewtopic.php?t=261540&highlight=
the positioning of the two pieces on my lower is a bit different than yours i think...the space on mine is farther apart.
i have a dvd by al brisco where he ably demonstrates setting up the second string lower. i just haven't got around to flipping the guitar over and going through it to perfection yet. |

looking at your pictures again and thinking about it, i think the upper barrel on your picture needs to move up the rod much further. again, check out the link i posted previously and see how those helpful fellas got me to set it up. |

Finally got it working....combination of narrowing the gap between barrel and stop mechanism and leaving the 1/16" space between nylon nut and changer finger as suggested. Could not have got it done without the help of everyone on forum who was kind enough to respond. Thank you everyone. |
