In town on business which allows me to wander the streets at night...
At Roberts, I discovered Mike Sweeney, probably have not seen Mike or had a chance to visit with him for a few years.. Mike was workin' that ZUM ! Always good to see him...Mike and the band were excellent...
At Legends was Tom Killen with the Vince Marino band, another excelent band. Now hear this, Tom plays a very early Sho Bud Pro II with the two hole pullers, round front. This Steel may have been the best sounding Sho Bud I ever heard. Tom told me he acquired it about 10 years ago and he and Loyd were amazed at the quality of the sound, a rare one...Tom uses an early Session 400 on this gig as well.
Mike and Tom, real Country music with all the right licks in the right places...

eye gets stuck on the fiddle.....
Tom was kind enough to give me a tour of that ShoBud about 10 years ago when he finished up a George Jones concert at Myrtle Beach. Nice ax. _________________ Lawyers are done: Emmons SD-10, 3 Dekleys including a D10, NV400, and lots of effects units to cover my clams... |

God, I love Robert's. I could just park myself in a chair with a PBR and stay for a week. I can't wait to head back down in December. _________________ Sierra Crown D-10 8+4, Sierra S-10 3+4, Carter D-10 8+7, Carter Starter 3+ a lot of engineering problems |

Tony, I saw Tom Killin not long ago. I didn't have time to talk to him because he was wearing out that Sho-Bud. It was without a dought one of the best Buds I've ever heard. |

Yeh for certain, pretty young gal, really talented, plays the heck out of that fiddle ..
I believe this band is at Legends each Tues night at the 6pm shift...I've seen them a few times now, really hard to leave once inside, tune after tune, traditional country plus they can light it up...Vince is a great singer and one heck of Tele picker as well...one of the finer bands I've been able to catch downtown in a long time. Plus add that Sho Bud in the mix and it's really hard to leave ! _________________ Emmons L-II , Fender Telecasters, B-Benders , Eastman Mandolin ,

Scott Ienogle and A-11 is the best band I have heard in Nashville (first picture).. Scott's a great vocalist, Larry Garvin (grandson of Hank Garland) is a phenomeal guitar player and all the others in the band are the best. Scott is one of the few fairly young people who know the old stuff. He says he was tutored by David Houston when he got to Nashville, and he is an excellent bassist who has played with a lot of people. |

I believe thats Stephanie Gerkan on the fiddle. She has a beautiful sister Megan that also plays the fiddle. Both are excellent. |

I doubt they have a house band but they may have the SAME band each Sat @ 2, 6 and 10...Broadway does not feature house bands... _________________ Emmons L-II , Fender Telecasters, B-Benders , Eastman Mandolin ,

Good luck on getting in there on Saturday night. The Brazilbillies used to be there every friday and saturday night but they have lost a lot of band members and have changed their name to something like Sons of Brazilbilly, Boys from Brazbilly. Jesse Lee, the band leader has Meniere's disease and has difficulty playing in front of the lights and doesn't appear much, Chris Casello, steel and guitar, left; Pappy who played fiddle is getting pretty old and doesn't play anymore with them.
I love Broadway but going there on Friday or Saturday night is brutal, there are so many people, it seems people love the old honky tonks where you can reach out and touch the band, but they don't make those anymore and that block of Broadway is the only place that has them.
Your best bet may be the Nashville Palace which is in the Opryland area, not crowed and is owned by Roberts, a nice place and has many of the bands that play at Roberts.

Thanks Darrell for info, i guess we will just add to the mix, prob take a taxie to and from there so we can have a few bruskies, well at least it sounds like a plan anyway.
We are playing at the music city bar and grill so the nashville palace is close to that so we will prob go there too _________________ Rittenberry SD10, 2 nashville 112s with telonics speaker, behringer EPQ450 power amp, 705 pups, Telonics FP-100, live steel strings, mogami cords, wet reverb |

They aren't necessarily the house band, but The Don Kelley Band is there every Saturday and Tuesday (I might be wrong) and you'd be hard pressed to find a better band. They don't usually have a steel player with them, but that's the band that gave Brent Mason and Johnny Hiland, JD Simo, and Guthrie Trapp their start. Their current guitar player is Daniel Donato. He's only 19 and is absolutely smoking.

The Don Kelly band , Wed nights at Roberts, always features a young hot Tele picker, it's a very good band but way different than a band with a great Steeler, a great Tele picker and a great Fiddler...and 3 part fluid harmonies...
Daniel Donata who is with Don K right now is a fine player for sure. I caught a set with him playing the other night as well...Right next door at Laya's was Porter Mclinton tearing up his Tele, Porter also did time with Don K... _________________ Emmons L-II , Fender Telecasters, B-Benders , Eastman Mandolin ,

I've seen Don Kelley with Porter McClister, too. He's a great showman. _________________ Sierra Crown D-10 8+4, Sierra S-10 3+4, Carter D-10 8+7, Carter Starter 3+ a lot of engineering problems |

I've seen Don Kelley with Porter McClister, too. He's a great showman. Also, I agree that I'd prefer to see a band with a steel and fiddles. The Don Kelley Band was just the best band I saw last year when I was there. _________________ Sierra Crown D-10 8+4, Sierra S-10 3+4, Carter D-10 8+7, Carter Starter 3+ a lot of engineering problems |

I remember seeing Don kelly at the stage coach yrs ago back in the 80s, at that time i think Troy Lancaster was with him, he sure has had a lot of great pickers with him over the yrs _________________ Rittenberry SD10, 2 nashville 112s with telonics speaker, behringer EPQ450 power amp, 705 pups, Telonics FP-100, live steel strings, mogami cords, wet reverb |

Just to clarify the confusion about the Don Kelley Band schedule, they play every Wed-Sat 6-10 at Roberts, as close to a house band as there is on Lower Broad. It's virtually always the exact same 4 piece line-up, even as the 10-2 slot after them fluctuates often, sometimes with great steel players, sometimes none.
I think Daniel is a fantastic player and has earned his spot with Don that has at various times featured Brent Mason (way back!), Redd Volkeart, Kenny Vaughan, Johnny Hiland, JD Simo and Guthrie Trapp among others. It's a good sign that he has a bright future, and he's a hell of a nice kid too.
The Nashville Palace is a nice relaxed alternative to downtown on a weekend, but even with crowds there's rarely more than a brief line to get into Roberts, and usually none. |

The StageCoach Inn, Boy does that bring back memories. That's where I first met Redd Volkeart and was blowned away by his licks, what a handful. Don Kelly had a good band for sure then, a young kid on fiddle by the name of Clinton Gregory. I can't remember the drummer but was very tight with them. This was sometime in the middle eighty's. Had some great times their. The owner/manager was a good looking blonde lady and I can't remember her name.
Thanks, J.R. |
