If anyone out there has studied some of Jack Smith's material with the Happy Goodmans and has been able to figure some of it out, I'd like to hear from you.

I'm going to try and learn some of his amazing licks and fills. Hoping someone can assist me with this journey! In particular, there a series of three videos on Youtube that the Goodmans recorded in Arlington, TX back in 1974. This is the stuff I'm searching for. Jack was playing his purple Sho-Bud.

Thanks,

Don

Don,
I haven't seen the video you are talking about but there is a Happy Goodman album called Wanted Live that is what really turned me on to Jack Smith, especially on "The Lighthouse". Get this album if you can find it.

Jack Smith was 16 years old when he played on the Wanted Live album. That album ranks as one of my favorites for steel guitar. Sadly, Jack passed recently from injuries after having a car accident.

Don, there is a video out of that Texas concert with Jack all over it.
I have it. Its called "The Goodmans Live in Texas". Its a little over one and half hours.
Goodman Ministries is still selling it. Check their website, I think the son Rick has the site still up. If not post back here or email me.

Also there is another new video out, it was on YouTube with the Goodmans Musician reunion. Jacks playing 'The Lighthouse' That might be available through the Goodman website too. I'll see if I can find it.

Bob,

That's the video I was referring to! Thanks for posting it here.

Jack was an unbelievable talent. It's hard to believe he reached such a pinnacle of success at such a tender age--16 years old. He must have been a prodigy!

It embarrasses me when I think how little I know after some 35 years of playing!

Don, I agree. I knew Jack Smith before I knew who Buddy Emmons was. Jack was just a little older than I am. I was also playing and listening to Gospel groups durning Jacks time with the Goodmans. So the groups I played with was covering the Goodmans, so I tried my best to cover Jack.

Does anyone remember Ronnie Moore, he played with the Hinsons durning this same time period. He was another young steel player I tried to copy.

Also, the Kingsmen had a good steel player back in the day. I don't remember his name, but if anyone can post a video of some vintage Kingsmen from YouTube, it would be greatly appreciated. Maybe they had several steel players...who knows.

Back in the 70s, there was a young guy who played the Watchmen Quartet from Clymer, PA by the name of Dave Crowe. He was the guy that really turned me on to the steel guitar. I don't know where he is today...perhaps still in Penna. If anyone knows Dave, tell him I'd like to get in touch with him sometime.

Jack Smith and Gary Dillard were my two favorite steel players in gospel music. They both were awesome and unique doing what others were not doing,

Don, here you go. I don't know the steel player. He's also good on harmonica. Enjoy.

Don,
The steel player with the Kingsmen was Gary Dillard. Gary is a member here and posts once in a while. I met Gary in the late 80's once when the Gospel group I was with at the time did a concert with the Kingsmen. I had just started playing steel and picked his brain that night. He was a very nice gentleman and a great player. It's a shame Gospel groups don't use live musicians anymore with a few exceptions. I am very blessed to get to play in one now because it is so rare. Musicians are just an afterthought to the front line. Crying or Very sad

Gary Debenedetto was the replacement for Jack, when he left the Goodmans. Gary is a friend of mine, and a "monster" player.
