Just wondering if anyone has ever tried running a lap steel though a Hammond Leslie speaker before and what that may sound like? Is it too much to be anything other than distracting for such or is it really a great sound?

Sounds great - really gives it a bit of a Hammond Organ sound.

A long time ago, Leslie sold a guitar input box for their cabinets. It had foot switches to turn the rotating soeakers off and on, and change the speed.

It's called a combo pedal... Leslie made several versions for different Leslie configurations. You can get a Universal Combo Pedal from TrekII, I've got one... it'll drive just about any Leslie on the planet.

Actually my first Leslie was given to me by a steeler... Bob McDaniels gave me a Fender Vibratone cab. What a cool guy... I see his widow Ann at the Dallas show every year.

Here's a cut from our 1977 album "Bethlehem"
I played my steel through the Leslie throughout this song and many of the other songs on the record.
The Leslie kicks in real good about 1:08...

I like that, Sounds great Dom. When you record in a studio with a Leslie, can you go direct or do you have to use a microphone? Larry

You have to use a mic, the sound of the leslie is created by the "Doppler Effect" the pitch is changed by the air movement of the rotating speaker.

I play through a Fender Vibratone cab as well. Sounds wonderful. Having variable speed control is a must.

Rusty Young of poco really nails the organ sound, but that is not the only trick they are capable of. The slow speed (and alternating between the two speeds) can let you get some really interesting tones.

Watch out, they are heavy. Even the Vibratones, but especially the units originally intended for use with organs.

I've heard that both chorus and tremolo 'effects' units were inspired by Leslie speakers.

Thanks for sharing. I just could not recall hearing such with that combo of a Leslie and a steel in the past.

I played straight guitar and pedal steel through a Leslie speaker back in the '60s, and I don't see what would make the lap steel much different. Even a Fender Rhodes sounds wonderful when played through one of them! Very Happy

Post  Posted 20 Aug 2014 11:23 pm     Anyone use a voicebox through their lap steel?

I didn't know what they actually called these things until recently, but they always sort of entertained me as to their use. Anyone use on with their steel? Do they work okay for such?

Just ordered my Rondo SX2 Lap Ash NA yesterday and can't wait for it to arrive and to start learning on it. I'll likely go blind in reading all the posts here, but it is fun to see what works and what does not on these things.

I know you said lap, but Moon (I think) used a Leslie with a pedal steel on Waylon's Wurlitzer Prize. I apologize for not posting a link to it, but I'm listening to w stream I'm enjoying now. Most enjoyable

I was just playing my lap steel through my "Allen Organ gyrophonic projector" yesterday!
It has two 8" Jensen speakers that rotate around a center axis, with a super cool brush contact that connects the amp out to the speaker inputs.

They sound great- an 'organic' chorus pedal!

If you're looking for that Jimmy Smith sound, he used both the Leslie AND the Cabinet Vibrato together. If you're pushing it with a Fender amp, the amp's "Vibrate Oh!" can sub for the Hammond's cabinet vibrato.
