I'm NOT convinced it was effects: unless he keeps his overdrive turned down. It sounded like just a cranked up amp.
I don't think it WAS a song, just some noodling over an invented progression. There were some bits that sounded like Deputy Dalton, but not much.

Look, the guy has great chops, no question.. I just don't get his sound though and NEVER have.. He has this chainsaw vibe to his tone, and its that way with every steel he plays.. I am certainly not going to question his style, or what he does.. His great success says it all, and he excels at his craft..
That gorgeous Jackson he was playing probably has beautiful sound played through the right amp.. Robert sounds like he plugged it into a cheap $25 distortion and is running it through a cheap SS amp.. I dunno, flame me if you want, but of course I know this guy has massive ability.. However his sound doesn't do it for me.. Its jagged and edgy and buzzy, and isn't a
sweet distorted tone at all..
Its HIS sound, and its made him famous, so what do I know??.. Just never liked his trademark sound...

He should get a couple of late-60's 100 watt plexi Marshalls and turn them up to 6 or 7 into a couple of different cabs. But I like is playng and tone anyway.

His pedal board is huge....Theres no real tone coming out of his rig. A good friend of mine was his road tech for about 6 months...Yes his amps are turned up loud, and overdriven, but the pedals...oh lord the pedals!...He is VERY hard on his guitars as well...I remember seeing a picture of him STANDING on his new G2...One foot on the headstock, another on the changer...I love listening to him play, for brief periods...its not "my" cup of tea...but he's good at what he does...

When I worked for Robert in 2002, after setting up before a show, he asked me to show him some country licks. I chuckle to hear that some of them stuck with him and how he's tacked on some other ideas.

Totally agree with Daniel. Unfortunately, Robert seems to have a good many detractors for a variety of reasons, some more valid than others in my humble opinion. |

I love what he does in his Genre but I don't like what he did here for several reasons.
Since when did having an opinion equate to hating a person.
I took the whole thing as a put down to country and Nashville Steel players and can’t understand why that went unnoticed.
His story should have started off by saying “I respected those steel players in Nashville they are really good but I can play a little country. Instead he implied they were just too dumb to know who he was and that they would just be blown away and go burn their PSG after they heard him play country.
You put him beside Paul Franklin, Buddy or any Nashville session picker or country picking road warrior and he would come in way back in the pack in that genre from what I heard. |
