Any Hawaiian Steel Guitar Players In Maui???
Any chance to hear any Hawaiian steel in Maui? I will be there on vacation the last week of August.

Don - Henry is working cruise ships, so he is rarely on Maui. When I spoke with Awana at the Maui SG Festival, she said she was back on Oahu.
Other steel players on Maui
Joel Katz,
Rus Ka'a'a
Jerry Valdreez
There are some others, but I'd look for these guys.

Owana Salazar is playing August 27 and 28 in George Kahumoku's weekly slack key guitar show in West Maui: http://www.slackkeyshow.com/
I'm in Kaanapali now and the only steel guitar I've seen is the one I brought with me.

Steel Guitar on Maui
Aloha, I am alive and well and playing steel on Maui. Check out my website at http://joelkatzmaui.com .
I teach two classes in Hawaiian Steel Guitar at the University of Hawaii where I am on the Music faculty. I play regularly here for weddings and conventions. I open up for the Willie K dinner show at Mulligans on Wednesdays when I am free and I play for the Old Lahaina Luau show on Sundays and sometimes for the Tihati show at the Hyatt.I usually play for First Friday Wailuku events too when I am free.
I was a featured performer at this year's Hawaiian Steel Guitar festival and I brought 12 students to perform
Steel is alive and growing here. Joel

Steel on Maui
I'll shoot my buddy Geri Valdriz an email and see if he's playing anywhere that week. He plays with Kevin Brown and a couple other bands on Maui.

I heard back from Geri and he is off that week due to getting his house tented for critters. Let us know how you make out and who you end up seeing.

Joel,
Mahalo for giving us some information on you.
It is great that you are teaching and perpetuating the instrument with the signature sound of Hawaiian music, the Hawaiian Steel Guitar.
Keep up the good work! We need more like you.
Just A Note: There are scholarships available based on the need for financial help with the Hawaiian Steel Guitar Assn based in Honolulu.

Been back a week and here is my report....
Arriving Sunday night there was a trio playing in the airport. Guy with a ponytail, Jerry (Geri?) was playing a six string frying pan. On Monday Konak (more on him below) told me Geri is a retired judge who studied under Jerry Byrd and has a nice collection of Rick's. I didn't get a picture. After about 18 travel hours I was most interested in finding the condo!
Monday night at the Old Lahaina Luau had a fine band and show. Guy named Konah had a fantastic touch and tone on the GeorgeBoard and was a really nice guy to boot!
Konah and my wife Audra.
Even with the shirt, I am not a Hawaiian player!
Wednesday night we had a great time at the Slack Key guitar show. Owana did a fantastic set of slack key and vocals. She played one tune on steel and then played steel in the jam session. The Ukelele Boys were unbelievable, churning out fantastic twin guitar lines and hot solos. They are no Tiny Tim's!
Here is Owana's 8 string Jerry Byrd steel. Jerry found it for her.
Joel, maybe we can hook up next time.
We had a great time and my wife is already planning a return trip for next year! It was a great trip including an 11 hour drive to Hana and back around the south side through the cattle ranch country!
