On my Stringmaster T-8 I always had an E for the 1st string. E C A G E C A G, top to bottom.

You can use an A# for the seventh string to get a C13th tuning. I like it for Hawaiian music but also find it useful for other kinds as well.

How does adding the A# make it a 13th chord?
The A#, or properly, the Bb, makes it a 7th chord.

Erv, you are correct in that the A# (Bb) adds a seventh to the C chord. The combination of all the notes includes the seventh and the 13th (A). The A serves as both the 6th and the 13th of the C scale and, combined with the 7th, it can be regarded and used as a 13th chord. The lack of the 9th and the 11th in this particular formation leaves us with a partial 13th chord and this is a common situation with Spanish guitars and other stringed instruments that make it difficult or impossible to play all the notes of a given chord.

On my T8 Stringmaster, I have:
inner neck - C13 (from top) G E C A G E Bb G
middle neck - E7 (standard)
outer neck - Jules Ah See B11 - E C# A F# D# B F$ B

I sometime tune the C13 to C13/A7 by moving the bottom sting to A and the Bb to C#.
