I am picking up a Nashville 400 in two weeks and just wondering if there is anything I can do to improve the tone. I have put the Ken Fox chips in my 112 and a 1000 and am thinking I might do that. Also, I am considering trying another speaker instead of the stock Black Widow that is in it now.
Has anybody made mod's to a 400 that they feel was a definite improvement in tone? |

The other day I was at a friend's place. I took my Quilter Steelaire Combo and he has a Fender Twin Reverb and a Nashville 400. The Nashville 400 has a Black Widow speaker and sounded a bit nasal and dull. Then we connected the Nashville 400 to to speaker of the Steelaire, and it sounded much brighter and much better. The speaker in the Steelaire is a slightly modified Emmince speaker, so I expect that the Telonics speaker or the Emminence will also improve the sound considerable. _________________ ----------------------------------

I've got the FOX intense mod, the MOD brand reverb tank, and the EPS15C speaker in mine. Each individual mod was an improvement. The speaker sounds great, and it's super light weight. Great grab and go rig. |

My steel instructor put a eps15c in his Nashville 400.
I don't think it it made as much diff in tone as it did weight.
My 2 cents. _________________ Kevin Raymer

George - Respectfully, why are you getting an NV 400 if you already want to change the tone? I mean, if you already know you want to improve upon it, which you can, why get it in the first place?
You could put a black box in front of it, works great, or a little izzy, I've never tried one. You could do lots of stuff but why bother in the first place if it's not the sound you want? I played thru a NV 400 for many years, sounded good to me, then I added the lemay mod, sounded even better. Then I moved on to tubes, better yet, to me. Everyone is different It's fun to experiment! But why buy it in the first place if you already want to change it?
Maybe the price is right? Thats cool too ! A different steel will change the sound also -I mean the bar.
Take care & have fun finding your OWN sound, not a sound someone else says sounds good! _________________ Just 'cause I look stupid, don't mean I'm not. |

Thanks to everybody for your comments. Bud, no offense at all taken but here is "the rest of the story." Many years ago I had a Nashville 400 or it might have been a 400 LTD. It has been so long, I don't remember and I don't remember why I got rid of it, but I know it had to do with me not really liking the sound. HOWEVER....this was before the Black Box and the Izzy, both of which I own. I also have a Wet Reverb that I am really crazy about.
When I had the first 400, my guitar was a Kline universal. Now I am playing a Zum D-10, so it is a new game with a different guitar.
Our lead singer showed up at the gig Friday night with a Nashville 400. He picked it up at a great price and it is in mint condition. He tried it for his lead guitar Friday night for the first set. My Valve King 112 with 50 watts could not play the volume that the band was playing without breaking up. He had his normal Gibson amp in his van, so for the 2nd set, I ditched the Valve King, and used the 400, and he went to his Gibson. I finished out the show with the 400 and liked it pretty darn good. The price is right but I didn't have the money for it Friday night, plus, we travel to NC in my brother's SUV and there was no room to bring it home. On the 25th, we have another gig in NC and he is going to bring the 400 back for me and I am leaving my amp at home so I have room to bring the 400 home.
With the Black Box that I have, the Lil Izzy, and the Wet Reverb, I think I can make the amp a keeper. I didn't have much time to mess with the settings during the show Friday night.
I had the Izzy and the Wet Reverb with me Friday night, and they improved it a lot. I am really looking forward to trying the Black Box, which I use with my 112 (which is out of order right now) and Evans FET 500.
I am an experimenter by nature. Always wondering what would happen if I tried this, etc. My Evans has a 1501 BW in it. I have been wanting to try another speaker in it for a while. I am not unhappy with the BW, but would like to see what another speaker would sound like. I put a EPS 12C in my 112 and it made it sound a lot better, as did the Fox chip mod. So, I am assuming that these changes would also improve the 400.
I may be putting the cart before the horse, but I am real interested in other's experience with mod's on the 400. I will see what I can get out of it with what I have and may just stay with everything stock. On the other hand, I may put in the Fox chip mod, based on my experience with my 112. Also, I really would like to have a Telonics to try in my Evans and see what the Telonics would sound like in the 400. If it doesn't work out for either amp, then I will sell it on the forum. |

there is something wrong with the line of thinking that makes you want to change something when you don't even know what it is? insecure much? wow.
just like all the people i read about buying used steels and having them sent to an expensive rebuilder before you even check to see that it doesn't need that! some people are nuts. |

Hey George - I moved on to Mr. Sarno's classic pre. At one point, before I sold the NV 400(couldn't afford to keep both) I hooked the classic-pre, up to the NV400. Now that was killer, to me. But I just couldn't keep both amps. $$$
You will love the BB!

George, don't worry about those people/person that are/is nuts. Insecure people try to make others look little to make themselves look big.
You can't go wrong with a Nash 400, no matter what you do with it. I have had several 400's over the years. My favorite one had chrome corners, 1501 BW with the Lemay Mod. I regret selling that one. Too bad they are so stinking heavy. The EPS-15C would fix that.

Hey Bud. I bought your Nash 400! I still use it!...A lot!
I had the ken fox intense mod put in it a few months after I bought it from you. It still stands as one of my stalwart amps. It's a work horse for sure. Funny that this post came up as I was thinking about putting an eps-15 in it, just to lighten the load...Take care. _________________ "The method by which the fool arrives at his folly was as dear to him as the ultimate wisdom of the wise." |
