I believe the early model BB's had a 12AU7 and were upgraded to a 12AX7. Both my BB's have the 12AX7 preamp tube. |

I really like the RCA 7025's or 12AX7's. They have a steel-friendly top end, a smooth and clear yet strangely less glassy sounding in the high, high treble. Big, rich midrange too.
But really, any good old 12AX7 is gonna do great in there: GE, Mullard, Telefunken, Sylvania, Raytheon, Amperex, Tungsram, and the rest.
With new tubes, just avoid those with "spiral filaments".

I'm still running the old 12AU7 in my original BB with vari-Z and it sound's great! Tried a few tubes that Brad suggested of the 12AU7 variety as my original requires, and all sound purty darn good! |

I also still have the orgiginal tube in mine.
I hope to send it in some day for the vari-z and any other upgrades there are nowadays. |
