I am having a speaker cab built for a friend and going to try a Vox 10" speaker with a Fender Super Champ X2 (15 watts) with 2 EL-84 power tubes. If the Vox speaker doesn't have the vibe I am looking for, what 10" speaker, low wattage would you suggest? |

I have a 10 from Dr. Z. Bought it for my Vibro Champ, then sold the amp. It's available. It's his proprietary design, built by Celestion. It's available. |

I should mention that this amp will be used for lap stee. Looking to get a classic vibe similar to a Fender Princeton so I would like to get a bit of hair when pushed a bit. |

I hooked up an 8ohm Celestion 12 inch Vintage 30 and the amp has much more fullness. I contacted my cab guy and said to make a 12 inch baffle instead of the 10 inch. This will be useful if my friend ever wants to change to a higher gain amp such as the Mesa Transatlantic 15 as I use with my lap steel. Nice match.
Thanks for the info and suggestions.

These super champ x_'s are really nice. Great & lightweight! I use the xd version(pre-x2) for six string & psg, practice at home. It's clean and loud enough to get "yelled at." The only issue I've experienced is that the DSP motherboard failed on my first one. It was used and no replacement parts were(are) available to repair it...unless you were to buy it new, and it's under warranty, you're SOL! I'd sure like to get the other repaired! _________________ “TONESNOB” |

Len, you read my mind... IMO there's nothing a 10 can do that a 12 can't do better.
Now put a 12" Blue in there and be amazed... I'm still blown away with what one did for my brownface Princeton. They *must* be kept below 20watts, of course. _________________ Too much junk to list... always getting more. |

Thanks Stephan:
I am putting this rig together for a friend as an entry level tube vibe with the Fender Super Champ X2 head with Celestion Vintage 30 that I had in the studio. Not a pro setup but a potential amp upgrade later on.
For my lap steel I use a Mesa Transatlantic 15 on the 15 watt setting and has a nice sound with a 12" Tone Tubby speaker. Looking at the Mesa TA 30 on the 40 watt setting for my pedal steel with a 1201-8 Neo.
Thanks again,
Lenny |
