Timeless. If you close your eyes and listen, it's almost like listening to an old 78. I hear Hawaiian elements in there, particularly the vibrato, which sounds a bit like Andy Iona, especially on chords. I wonder if any of the younger generation can talk about how the roots of the music developed, and what, if any, role did Hawaiian music play in that. But I love Sacred Steel. Perhaps I should just read Bob Stone's book.
I love when she goes into the sermon towards the end on the bass strings. She is really fun to listen to.

Hey Mike,
Hawaiian influence in traditional Sacred Steel can be traced back to the Eason brothers during the Hawaiian music craze of the 30's. In those days, Troman Eason was a hawaiian steel guitar instructor who was taught by Jack Kahauolopua in the mid-30's. Troman Eason played both secular hawaiian music and sacred music in church using the same hawaiian style. Troman Eason had a younger brother by the name of Willie Eason, who along with his brother's musical influence added single string melodies which mimicked the singers in the black church; and thus Sacred Steel as we know it was born. Willie Eason is traditionally known as the father of all SS music.
Her style on the song closely resembles the style Willie Eason played in days past. I would highly recommend Bob Stone's book.

Thanks, Chris. I appreciate your input. In fact, I just ordered a copy of Bob's book an hour ago.
When the first Sacred Steel compilation was released on Arhoolie, I purchased it. That was the first time I'd ever heard Willie Eason and was really when I first started getting interested in steel. In fact, I think I remember that my first steel was almost the same Electar that he was pictured with on the cover.

Yes, I hear a lot of Willie's influence in her playing, too.
There are so many young "sacred steel" players coming up no one can keep up with them. And little-known older players who never stray far from their home turf.
