How many Emmons Players do we have?

Post by Nick Reed »

Just wanted to take a quick poll to see how many of you on the Forum play the best Steel Guitars in the world. Of course I'm talking about Emmons Guitars. Whether you play a new Lashley LeGrande III with everything on it or an old P/P with black wood necks & no knee levers. . . .tell us whatcha got and how sweet it is. I'll post & boast about my (4) Emmonses a little later as the thread develops.

Lashley LeGrande D-10 with 9 and 9. It was one of the first Lashley LeGrandes before the terms II and III were coined. It came with all 4 hole bellcranks. I soon replaced them all with 14 hole bellcranks.

And of course it is black mica Image

But I have not played it in over 3 yrs since I got my Excel SuperB U-12. I would say it is one of the newest unused old Emmons LeGrande's around. Image

Hi Nick
I have an old Emmons E9 circa 1980.
Got it used for almost nothing.
DeVere Adamson, the leading PSG player in Iowa, says it sounds better than anything in his shop!
I can't talk shop talk with you, though.
Not knowledgeable enough, sorry.

A black D10 LeGrande III - 8+8. Built in 2000 and it's wonderful! Speaking of which, I could use a 'spare' - it must be the same colour, of course.....

Black D-11, with 10 + 6, '68 or '69, belonged to Bobby Garrett. It had lot of mileage when I got it and I played it out for 3 years. The string spacing is 11 strings in the space of 10, on a D-10 body. It sounds fabulous, but it's not as comfortable to play as my current, first choice.

Nick, I can't resist this one. Here goes.
1. 2000 LeGrande III, black mica 8+7 plays as soft as any guitar I ever played and sounds great.
2. 1996 Blue Lacquer Birdseye Maple LeGrande II D10, 8+9. Beautiful in every way including tone.
3. 1995 LeGrande II (w/LeGrande decal)D10,8+8 Mauve (plum burgandy) Love this one.
4. 1981 black mica push pull D10, 8+5 built for me by Bryan Adams new. Out of this world tone.
5. 1977 Red lacquer D10 8+5. Wood necks. A rare beauty. Recently sold to TS McDonald, he is letting me have it back. Image
6. 1967 black mica D10 8+7. Very near mint and one of my favorites to play. Sounds good, good, good!
7. 1966 D10 black mica bolt-on. 8+4 I am presently rebuilding it.
8. 1966 D10 black mica bolt-on, 8+1 I am presently rebuilding it also.

I play a derby red Le Grande II, 8x5. Bought new in 2000. Even thought amp type wasn't requested, I use an Evans SE 200 with a Peavey 1502 speaker. Man what a tone! Larry

I play a 1972 Emmons, standard 8 + 4, with the original standard pickups and laquer greenish colored body. (I'd asked for "BLUE".) Sounds great and never a mechanical problem. Great timbre, tone and whatever else it came with.

I have an '80s red S12 p/p that I am converting from E9 extended to universal. I'm hoping to make it my main instrument for playing live country and alt country. With a good single coil pickup, these things honk like nothing else ever made. And when they are adjusted right they have easy action with a very solid feel. Mine has a vintage '60s-'70s look and sound that I love. As soon as I figure out exactly what copedent I want, I'm going to send it to someone to complete the conversion.

I am the very proud owner of a 1996 midnite blue LeGrande II with 8 and 5. It is my first Emmons, and also my first D-10. As I learn my way around on it, I am more and more happy with what it is capable of.

In 2001 I bought Tommy White's black 76 D-10 8 & 6 P/P but I never play it. I play a D-11 and miss the extra string but it proudly sits in my music room and I know some great history through Tommy and Jim Cohen's ownership and someday may part with it.

Right now I have 12/66 Bolt-on 1090D with black mica. I also have a parts-o-Emmons I made for my eight year old that is a black D10 with everything from Wraparound parts to those for the last PPs -- sort of like Johnny Cash's "One Piece At a Time." Right now it has a red belly (not original) and a wood neck on the C6 and aluminum on the E9. When i get a chance I will put an aluminum neck back on the C.
I used to own 1969 1280D and also Tommy White's Opry Stage D10 which was a late black mica with the 1970s-style pedals that I think were made for single necks because they were shorter than normal.<FONT SIZE=1 COLOR="#8e236b"><p align=CENTER>[This message was edited by Chris Lucker on 19 October 2003 at 11:35 PM.]</p></FONT>

I own a Fatback push/pull'75 Emmons 8/7 Tobacco Brown Lacquer body and necks. Stock single coil pickups.
I bought it in '85 from Bobby Seymour, he told me that it belonged to Hal Rugg.

The guitar is trouble free, never any
problems.
