I am playing tonight at the Parlour, in Providence, with Biscuit City . . . and am pleased to announce that steeler Mark Tomeo's group, Pages of Paul, will be doing the set after ours.

I am anxious to hear Mark on his own axe. A few weeks ago he was brave enough to sit down at my Carter on a gig and crank out a few tunes with The Biscuit. That gets my respect.

Hey Chris
I remember Mark Tomeo as being "ahead of the game" many years ago but haven't heard much about him. How about a little more info on his playing and his band?

Hi Tony--Sure, glad to talk about Mark.

If memory serves, he is originally from the Boston area, and was with the country-experimental group Rubber Rodeo. He now lives in Pennsylvania, where Pages of Paul work out of. They do all original music, written by Paul Curcuruto. The group consists of bass, drums, Paul on strong rhythm guitar, singer Karen Nogle, and Mark on a Zum 12--I believe it is a universal. He also played dobro on the set.

The Parlour gig was a lot of fun. For one thing, it was a thrill to see two steels on stage. And it was promoted in a column in The Phoenix, our alternative newspaper, by writer/musician Rudy Cheeks.

Biscuit City played, and Mark came up to play a bit with us. Biscuit City does Americana, country, roots, but unlike the Pages, no original songs. This made the combination of the two groups an interesting contrast.

Pages of Paul then took the stage, and Big Paul led the musicians through a set of his originals, with Mark handling most of the solo work aided by occasional tasty use of, I believe, a phaser or flanger. Karen, by the way, is an exceptionally strong and confident singer.

The group graciously invited me to play on a couple of tunes. Yep: twin steels--yee-haw!

There's a bit more to the story. About 10 years ago I bought an MSA S-12 from Marylander Bill Erb. It is set up in my house here in Providence, as a practice steel; my Carter S-12 (with 5 and 6) stays in the box, ready for gigging. When I bought the MSA, I looked at the works underneath, and there was engraved the following: "Easy Mark, Rubber Rodeo."

That's right: I now own the very steel which Mark played in many Rubber Rodeo gigs in the 70s! I brought him up to the house before the Parlour set, and he had a few nostalgic moments with the old workhorse.

Check out Pages of Paul on YouTube--and Tony and others from our area, stay tuned for their next foray into the Ocean State.

Tony I beleave they will both welcome you as they have Anna and I. We will be there and I will be bringing My 8 String Dynalap Steel Tha Mark Vinsbury Built. I bought it from a guy in Canada/Plays real nice. I tuned it like my Dobro. GBDGBDG I do not use the Bottom String yet as I have to find a use for it first so I tuned it a low D.
Hope to see you and ann at Manny's on the forth if I can stay out of the sun long enought. I had a darn Heat Stroke two weeks ago today. I don't know enought to get out of the haeat and hot sun. This is my third one in 5 years.
