Hi! I'm curious to find out if there is a company that still makes 8 string non-pedal steels with a stand instead of a lap top? If you know of a company, I sure would like to get their name and web site. Thanks! Gene.

Melobar makes two 8 string lap steel models. These can be inserted in something called a "Steeler" which appears to be a stand or frame. It appears that the cost is the same with or without the frame, but I haven't checked it out. I think the site is "melobar.com" But to be sure, I would suggest going to "resoguit.com" and click on the Smith Family Music link under makers.

I have a Melobar Super Steel (a Stringmaster copy, with 24" scale and a Steinberger head), and it's a fine sounding instrument. The base and legs, if I remember correctly, were about $150 extra. Remington and Sierra are two other manufacturers currently making high quality 8-string table steels.

Two more are Canopus and Excel, both of which are Japanese companies making excellent instruments.

The Melobar SuperSteel sounds fantastic.

Go here (http://members.home.net/mtatro/supersteel.htm) for shot of my D6 on an aftermarket stand.

Mickd -

Thanks for the heads up on the Sierra Stand Up.

I've got their 8 string lap steel which I love, but I have to say after looking at the pictures of their Stand Up 8, it looks like it has 10 strings, not 8. Check the number of tuning pegs.

I wonder if it has the string spacing typical of their 10 stringers as opposed to the wide spacing of the laptop 8. Anybody know? I'm interested in a 10 string lap, but slants at the lower frets with narrow spacing are always a concern.

I think you're right - I emailed Don about this ages ago but looks like he's too busy making guitars to maintain the Web site !

Thanks Mick

Hope you're right about Don being busy making guitars; he's nice to deal with.

If anybody gets to try one of these StandUp 8's, I'd like to hear what your experience is.

For example, if it's really 10 strings (reducible to 8 of course by leaving the 1st & 10th positions unstrung). How it plays & sounds. What the string spacing is, etc.
