Double post!
I apologize for the double post on here! There
certainly was nothing to let me know that the first
one ever got on here, therefore, I tried again...so
they both went through. Then, as much as I tried...
I could not delete one of them.
This is embarrassing...but, that's life!

I met Weldon some years ago when the late Kenny Dale and I went to the "Steelin' For Hearts" show in Maryland if I remember right. Weldon was the main performer that day and I'd wanted to talk to him for awhile as I knew that he and Hal Rugg tuned their 2nd strings to C# instead of the more common D#. I thought he'd give me a great musical insight as to why they did this but he simply said "I wanted to get three notes out of that string and at the time the steel I was playing wouldn't lower more than once so I just tuned the string down and raised it twice".... A great player and a nice guy to boot and he will be missed for sure..........JH in Va.
Don't matter who's in Austin (or anywhere else) Ralph Mooney is still the king!!!

If there ever was an icon of pedal steel guitar
In Nashville no one ever had to look too far
Just turn on the OPRY and Weldon would be there
Or turn on the radio and he'd be on the air
On hit after hit his style can't be denied
Playing licks that thousands of other players tried
The loss of a man like him is hard to understand
And when it came to steel guitar, Weldon was THE MAN!
It's sad to see him go, the music world will grieve Our prayers go to family and friends that he leaves
God said it was time for the gentle giant to fall we'll miss him so for Weldon was an Idol to us all

I'm so sorry to hear this news. I never met Weldon, but his artistry on the instrument never ceased to amaze me. He was a master and an innovator, an inspiration to all.
Rest in peace, Weldon Myrick. You done good here.

I feared the worst when I heard he had a stroke. So sad, my thoughts are with your family, rest in peace, Weldon. Praise the Lord on an instrument of ten strings! Another light dims and goes out down here...

Weldon played the intro to “Nashville again†by Paul Siebel. That intro plus the first line of the singer was the opening tune for a Dutch national radio show that was one of the few European radio shows to promote country music throughout the seventies. It was one of the reasons I started playing steel and it might even be the reason there are so many steelplayers from the small country of Holland active on this forum.
Now we have the internet to keep us up to date with whats happening in Nashville, but in those days we were waiting by the radio every week for Weldon to start playing

Just heard the news from Al Brisco as he is here in Australia for a few days. Very sad news indeed.
We are losing those we should refer to as "The Gold Standard" of steel-guitar, the men who lifted it to the heights, those who inspired us with both their playing and their personalities.
To Weldon Myricks's family and his many friends I send my humblest and most sincere condolences.
RIP Weldon Myrick. Your place amongst the Immortals is assured.

The steel guitar is a hard mistress. She will obsess you, bemuse and bewitch you. She will dash your hopes on what seems to be whim, only to tease you into renewing the relationship once more so she can do it to you all over again...and yet, if you somehow manage to touch her in that certain magic way, she will yield up a sound which has so much soul, raw emotion and heartfelt depth to it that she will pierce you to the very core of your being.

Very sad.
In the early 70's I wrote to Weldon c/o The Opry, about a pot. they were using in their volume pedals. I never really expected a reply.
I was staggered when I received a letter from him.
It was two pages of foolscap, hand written and with diagrams explaining all.
That he found time to do that for a nobody left me with the greatest respect for him.
A fantastic player and a great bloke. Sadly missed, but he left us a legacy that will live on.

Here is the comment from Jimmy Peppers on Weldon's Passing. I'm posting it for Jimmy as he is not a forum member.
There goes a real champion. one of the nice ones. Weldon would do demos for me at Bradley's barn

I heard the news when I ran into DeeGee Overby this afternoon... Another legend of steel guitar is gone.. What a loss for all of us, and what great blessings he bestowed on us with his being, and his music..

Goodbye To One Of My Steel Guitar Heros
I was very sad to hear about Weldon today. He was one of my earliest influences, along with Sonny Garrish and others. His classic solo on Johnny Bush's recording of 'Whiskey River' is one of the all time great steel solos. I will miss you, Weldon. Thanks for the inspiration all these years.

Weldon was one of my biggest pedal steel guitar heroes. I got to shake and howdy with him and Cayton Roberts once at the old Shoney's restaurant in Nashville. Such a warm human being. So glad I got to meet him. The only steel playing hero of mine I've yet to meet is Lloyd Green. He and Big Jim Vest were the first to turn me on to pedal steel. RIP Mr. Weldon. Your work on earth is done.
