A 4-40 seems to be to small for the 7/64 rod. |

Then either the end of the rod is messed up, or you don't really have 7/64" rod. Standard 7/64" rod (a fairly uncommon size, by the way) should measure .109" if you check it with a micrometer or a caliper. A small chamfer ground or filed on the end of the rod should allow you to start the die. To double check the die, try starting it on a 4-40 screw.
If the die still won't work, you may be dealing with 1/8" rod, instead.
(Standard Mil-Spec 4-40 screws measure about .108" on the major diameter.) |

I got them from Emmons and they are listed at 7/64. That is really all I have to go on. Donny also the 4/40 die will not screw up on the rods on my Legrande 2 that are all ready threaded. Maybe they are bigger. [This message was edited by Lyle Bradford on 05 December 2003 at 07:37 PM.] |

Lyle,
The discrepancy may be that the rods you got from Emmons are rolled threads as opposed to cut threads (die cut).

Lyle,
You need a 6-32 die. |

Dekley's (and others') 1/8" rods were machine threaded at 5-40, but I always had trouble hand threading them, so used 6-32 instead. Hand threading your 7-64" rods with 5-40 might work. |

The late Ron Lashley Sr told me the following:
"We went to 7/64" rods so we could use the more standard 4-40 thread instead of having to use a 5-40 thread as one needs on a 1/8" rod."

GetA 4-40 "adjustable" die. It has a screw which can be loosened to allow the threads to be a little oversize. McMaster-Carr sells them. |

Has anyone priced a good 4-40 die lately?Last one I priced,I decided it was cheaper to take it to a machine shop, luckly I found a friend that had one.
