How many steels do you have?

Down to 5 pedal steels from 14 a couple of years ago. I moved into a smaller house Alan, so a lot of stuff had to go.

One Williams, which I play constantly, the other a Sierra U14 which I couldn't resist cos I always liked the sound and build quality. I will get around to playing it when I find the time to re-rod it.

With an eye on the point Mike Perlowin made, yes, one wife too, would trade her for another U12, plus cash adjustment - provided I can find enough cash!

At the moment, 3 pedal steels and 4 non pedals. One of the pedals will be sold soon, and possibly another of them when I get through fixing it up. I really ought to thin the non pedal herd a bit too.

I guess you're right, Darvin.

They say "death and taxes wait for no man" but maybe they should add "confined space" to that list.

Sometime over the next 18 months I'm going to have to move, and I'm dreading it. Deciding which instruments to discard is rather like deciding which of your children to discard.

I'm in the same boat Alan. I have a lifetime of musical 'stuff' that I have collected over the years. I have told my wife that I will itemise all of my equipment and give an approximate s/h value of it. My attic is full of bits and pieces, as is my recording studio. I have a couple of friends who want me to leave them my Emmons push pull, but wifey will be the beneficiary of the sale of that one after I have gone. My late father's Italian accordion would go either to my niece or one of my granddaughters. Isn't this all getting macabre!

I don't sit and stare at my guitars. They get played - every one of them. I play one more than the others, but they are all very good guitars. I have room for them and they all live in my recording studio. If a nice guitar comes on the market in the UK that rings my bell I will buy it. End of, and it's my pleasure to own nice guitars and amps.

I am actually trying to reduce the number of guitars that I have.... I'll probably get down to 3. A U-12, an Emmons PP S-10 and a Sho~Bud S-10. That is still more than I need, but I do want those flavors.

Do you find it hard to switch between the s-10s and the U-12?

Mike, I had a U12 and a D10 for about 10 years, and I stayed confused all the time. When I got serious about playing again, I went to D10's exclusively because I felt I played better on them than on the U12. I have an S12 I'm restoring now, so I may try the U12 route again, or maybe the Bb6th. Junior Knight, and David Wright sure get a lot of music out of that tuning, as Maurice did.

Jimmy, when I had 14 steels, I was playing in a church band and left a steel set up at church all the time. I rotated every month or two, and of course had one set up at home for practice. They all got played, but I actually didn't need but two. I kept telling my wife and myself that they were an investment. LOL

Darvin, I've been playing U-12 almost since day one. I borrowed a maverick to get started, but got my green u-12 3 months later.

Obviously, I'm completely used to it. Occasionally I'll try out somebody else's 10 string, and I always feel that the bottom strings are missing.

I should mention that some of the steels and other instruments that I have would no longer exist except that I bought them cheap to save them being thrown out, and then spent hours restoring them to give them a new lease of life.
