Maybe someone with firsthand experience or that super handy gibson steel book can shed some light on what exactly this thing is. Looks like an older c520, based on the red and black buttons, but I thought all c520s had the 4-8-4 pickups; these look much different.

Those are first edition humbucking pickups from '56-57 era. They soon went to a single row of poles,

It's a C-530, which effectively replaced the Consolette in 1956. I believe this was the first Gibson model to have humbucking pickups, a year before Spanish guitars acquired them.
