I was in Nashville last week and played the Sho-Bud Jerry Bird Fry Pan listed here: http://cartervintage.com/ukes/ukespage.html

I've never messed around on an 8 string before and instantly loved it. The tone was incredible, clean a crisp. I play a lot of sets where I take my lap steel because the pedal steel is too big and this seemed like one that could cop some of those pedal sounds a little better when it just isn't practical to bring along.

I also played a Double 8 National that was a blast.

I can't afford that fry pan guitar, but I was curious if there other guitars modeled after this out there that I should look into. Any advice?

you can find those for 1/2 of the $2750 they are asking...good grief...look at the prices on their stuff. I'm pretty sure this is a 20% consignment type operation, thus the prices.
i bought my Gilchrist F5 mandolin thru Christie Carter when she was at Gruhn and they were his US dealer.

the Excel JB model is essential the same (or better) frypan repro - look for those too.
