thanks Roger, that's some nice playing, I know that a great Julian Thorpe played 14 string, but can't find any videos on the net, except one, and on that one is just a music, no video...always wondered about those 14 string monsters, but was chicken too much to try to play one, lol, I am old now, I can do whatever I want, so who know, maybe my next step is going to be a S-10 Sierra or Excel or something... I heard some guys here on the SGF who kick butt on U-12...some great pickers on here... thanks again for the info Roger...

Pretty sure the late Winnie Winston played and wrote about 14 string tunings.

my favorite U-12 player is David Wright, amazing musician, Maurice as well, Julian had it's own style that can be little hard to understand sometimes, but there is not too much of his music out there neither...

I saw Joe Wright play a 14-string Sierra at some local steel shows put on by the late Jess Hurt between 2000 and 2007. He was unbelievably awesome and versatile. I've never heard Johnny B Goode played better anywhere and that includes all guitarists!
Red Emmons D10 fatback #2246D with sweet Hugh Briley split cases, Black Emmons S10 #1466S, '73 Fender "Snakeskin" Twin Reverb, Peavey Nashville 400, Line 6 Pod XT, Fender 400, Fender Stringmaster Double-8, too many guitars, one bass!

The late Al Vescovo played a 14 string C6.

There is about an hour and 10 minutes of video footage of Al, playing at the Phoenix show in 2010 and 2011. His widow is contemplating issuing a DVD.

There was a player named Tom Webb who had a very early Mullen D14. He toured with Gatemouth Brown for a number of years and I met him around San Jose. Not sure what became of him or the guitar. Either Peter Grant or Steve French may know more.

Not to hijack the thread, but Mike, I would love to have a video of Al Vescovo. I loved hearing him play, steel or guitar either.

MSA Millennium, Legend, and Studio Pro, Reese's restored Universal Direction guitar, as well as some older MSAs, several amps, new and old, and a Kemper Powerhead that I am really liking. Recently added a Zum D10, a Mullen RP, and a restored blue Rose, named the "Blue Bird" to the herd. Also, I have acquired and restored the plexiglass D10 MSA Classic again that was built as a demo in the early '70s. I also added a '74 lacquer P/P, with wood necks.

Sad to say, I lost touch with Tom many years ago. He was a good friend and a great teacher. He got into Scientology, I think, and moved to Florida. Been at least 20 years ago. Del Mullen might have more recent information. I'll never forget that Mullen D14 -- what a beast!

I OWN a S-14 Wheeler, Mr. Wheeler being a classic madman-in-the-basement kind of builder. It's already at least two degrees of being haphazardly re-tuned (re-copeded?) into some bizarre, non-sense tuning... but at 4+4, I've always had the intent of getting a operating C6th tuning on 8 or 9 strings and use the rest for something more related to this:

than to a "real" 14-string. But right now a D-10, an octave dropper and a couple of loopers are getting me where I'm going. There are always rainy daze needing a project, sometime.

Tom was a fine musician - I took dobro lessons from him in the mid '70s in San Jose at Guitar Showcase. Pete Grant also taught there in those days, a buddy of mine took banjo lessons from him for a bit.

I asked Pete six or seven years ago years at a NorCal steel jam if he was in contact at all with Tom, but he hadn't heard anything of him in years - he seemed to disappear off the face of the earth.

Tom played in a band around the Bay Area that was very good called Shagbark Hickory. Pedal steel, dobro and a little banjo.

...just found a couple of old posts from Dave Ristrim and Steve French where they heard years ago that Tom Webb quit music in the late '70s and moved to Florida to become involved in Scientology.

Thinking back to those days, though the memories are pretty sketchy, when I knew him I would have never seen that coming.
