Although it has been discontinued, at one time, Peavey made a unit called the Tube Sweetener to do just what you are talking about.

I had a Steel King and I used a Sarno Black Box. With the Vari-Z knob it also adds tonal flexability. I have two BB's and I use them on a bunch of stuff.
