New Asher-Akaka lap steel

I've purchased #12! It's hard to wait. I'm off to Hawaii on 4/2, and it would be great to have it. For those of you who want a good, less expensive Asher steel, he makes a [at this point, 1200 miles from mine, I forget the model] [Junior Hawaiian?] which I have and like. It's a solid body Weisenborn shaped 6. Bill also makes lap steels for Ben Harper.

Why the slotted headstock? In the past I've understood that headstock mass contributed to longer sustain. Is it for looks or is there a musical reason that I'm not aware of.
