Very nice work, Dom, on a classic. That era in song writing was a gold mine for steel guitar. It kind of begs the question "Have all the great themes been written?"

That was a most interesting performance. I really liked your creativity.....your variable approach is exceptional to most I've heard.
Those pickup give off a 'special sound' similar to the affect one gets when using one of those 8 inch Rola speakers in the older amps.

Yes; I recorded direct thru a little box called a Red Square it has bass, treble and gain. The pickups have less bass than I would like and lower output more like a Fender than a Gibson.
I notice that when I play this steel instead of one of my George L. pickup steels, I need to nudge the bass and volume up a bit to get the same levels.

Ray thank you for the kind words, coming from a great player like you it's a real compliment.
I do strive for new and varied styles. Since I perform solo most of the time, I try to change the sound of the steel up a bit so it won't get tiresome song after song. I often play through a leslie or leslie simulator, sometimes a chorus, tremolo and distortion when called for.
On this track I started out single string and vibrato (Hawaiian like) I know I lift the bar too much, and I need to work on sounding more Hawaiian in general.
Then I went to fuller chords and blues licks around the melody to "jazz it up"
Near the end I went down to the lower strings and used Chorus and Tremolo, and finally started playing octaves (5 strings apart on my tuning)
When I perform live, I will mix it up with the varied sounds and then I also add vocals.
This was intended as a sound demo of the "Artec" pickups and I just started having fun playing the song.

| I call it the Guitaresque tuning as its closer to the flexibility of the guitar to play any genre in that tuning and the relationships between the notes layout nicely on the fretboard for steel players. |

I think of my tuning as A6th... extended
Hi to Lo: F# D A# G E C# A F# E C# B G#
the 6 basic strings (E C# A F# E C#) is the standard A6th tuning I learned on as a child taking Hawaiian guitar lessons.
I first added the low pair B, G# giving me all sorts of stuff in "E" tuning
Then I added A#, G on top that gave me full 4 note diminished chords.
Lastly I added F#, D that gave me Aug5 triads
There are so many other chords available they are to many to list.
Right now I am planning a 13 string steel to add the low E (Guitar 6th string) to give me the low range that standard guitars have. It will give me a full major E chord at the bottom!

The e minor 11 looks interesting...
I am considering making a new lap steel with palm benders. And because I am familiar with the pedal steel in E9 I am thinking of using 2 simple pedals raising G# to A and B to C#...
How I tune the other strings is up in the air right now.

Sounds great. Your Red Square box seems to be doing the trick for you. I have an old Ibanez PQ-401 parametric EQ that I use to similar purpose (tone shaping, not DI) - really love what it can do.
But, also, that's a beautiful arrangement you've done of the song. Cheers! |
