I have Buddy's recording is on Soundcloud now ( https://soundcloud.com/tapsteel ) I guess I'll have to upgrade at some point because the free space is limited. Buddy's recording was made at Jeffran in '83 or '85. He has a direct line into his Session 500 so the rest of the band is a little back in the mix.

Don't believe there is a way to do that Peter. When computers weren't so sophisticated and didn't have everything built in, you could get a Creative sound card that had a feature called "What You Hear." By clicking on it, you could record thru a recording program to your computer and save as an mp3. I really don't know if the new built in sound cards will let you do that.

You could try and find a copy of the cassette on Ebay or something. Found my copy in Europe a few years ago and paid 45 Euros for it.

I'd like to make MP3's of other SoundCloud things. If I let it run and record to Audacity I lose some quality.

There are add-ons for both Chrome and Firefox that will figure out the location of and copy the mp3 file to your hard drive. They work well except they include some adware and are hard to disable when you don't want to copy. I can only speak for the ones I have used recently. Perhaps someone else has used an add-on that's not so intrusive. There's a slew of them available and I haven't tried them all. Some are specifically made to use with Soundcloud.

Google search to copy Soundcloud mp3

From looking at the sound signatures of what material Chris has listed and what else you can view on the Soundcloud website, it looks like the files are done in mono. If that it the case, that would result in a loss of signal when recording the clips in Audacity etc, thus a loss of quality.

I couldn't find anything on their website stating what sample rate the songs are recorded and displayed in.

Peter--I've got DownloadHelper as an extension for my Firefox browser and it does save Soundcloud streams as an mp3.

https://chrome.google.com/webstore/search/soundcloud%20downloader?hl=en-US

After you download the file you can look at the mp3's properties and see whether it's mono or stereo and see what the bitrate is.

Read the reviews for SoundCloud Downloader StormCloud. For $.99 it pays for itself after one song! For songs that are not designated as "downloadable" by Soundcloud, the Downloader developer has a workaround to download them anyhow.

The Nameless Shuffle that was downloaded from Picosong is only at 64kbps and is mono having been encoded by iTunes 11.1.3:

Nameless Shuffle

It sounds "OK" and there is no loss importing it into Reaper. In this case the brilliance of the steel playing an the utter tight simplicity of the rhythm track makes the song sound so great that I tend to ignore the lower fidelity. Content trumps bitrate!

Got DownloadHelper for Chrome to do the SoundCloud cuts. Works great! Best $.99 you can spend! Thanks!

I can understand all the players, apart from Tom Brumley, wanting to put their own distinctive licks on this solo, and very commendable they all are, but I much prefer the Brumley sparse licks, combined with the Brumley tone, that's what got me into playing pedal steel all those years ago

That was going to be my suggestion too, Billy, but I think what they want is to know how to download from the actual Soundcloud page, if there is a way. I can almost always record something using Audacity, but Soundcloud keeps a pretty good lid on their output. The content provider has to supply either a download link or download option to the work for anyone to be able to download the songs, is the way I understand Soundcloud.

I tend to agree with Richard. My two favorites were Tom and Lloyd. Their tone and approach to the tune was most distinctive. The other players sounded more like they were just stringing intricate licks together but the performances lacked emotion. Only my impression...
