eminence speaker for deluxe reverb

Post by Dave Campbell »

i'm suffering from some "honkiness" when using my deluxe reverb reissue with my true tone equipped ldg.

i'd like to try replacing the speaker, and my local store here in canada will stock eminence speakers. does anyone have recommendations for something that'll sound good for pedal steel, but will also sound good for tele playing?

EPS-12C

I've recently built a few amps with that speaker and it's great

Eminence speakers

Dave, You can order Eminence speakers from loudspeakers.ca in Canada. I've bought a couple of EPS 15C speakers from them. They are in Ontario.

the eps 12 seems like the logical choice, but it's 4 ohm and the deluxe needs 8 ohms.

Dave, You might consider the Telonics 12 inch 8ohm speaker. I have one of their 15 inch [but 4 ohm] in one of my cabs. They are about the same price as the Eminence speakers and they are great speakers.

Just a whacky thought...

What about having the amp re-biased if that hasn't been done recently? Tim's the amp guru here - what do you think Tim? Be good to at least know that the amp itself is performing as it should.

As a Tele player, I found the first generation neo guitar speakers I tried too "lively" and brittle for my tastes. I'm guessing these newer Eminence or Teleonics aren't so harsh sounding?

It's a very personal thing, but I love Weber alnicos in Fender style amps. Kinda makes them a little more forgiving, and believe me, I need a lot of forgiving when I play steel :-)

The 'Cannabis Rex' may be a possibility, there is a post in this section I believe with feedback concerning these speakers.

I give a +1 to the 8-ohm Telonics neo 12". Sounds great for PSG in my 64 DR.

The Telonics, EV or JBL options will all be superior to what Eminence can supply

I bet an old JBL D120 would sound good. They did in a Twin Reverb.

D120F in a DR is a match made in heaven.
That said, the 15" Eminence steel special IS a wonderful speaker...
And the Telonics is made by Eminence, so I don`t think the argument against "anything Eminence has to offer" is valid anymore.... Used to be, for sure.

Many options, just less that are 8 ohms.

I was not aware that Eminence offered the Telonics speakers in their product line. I was under the distinct impression that one had to order those directly from the fine folks at Telonics.

they don't - but the Telonics speakers are made by Eminence

Eminence will make an 8ohm 15" EPS speaker, but they need to have a minimum order of 50 pieces

thanks for your recommendations guys. i was limited in choice as shipping a speaker up to canada can get expensive quick.

the fates dealt me an old electrovoice sro 12...the old white "coffee can" speaker. i got it for a pretty sweet deal (and the guy threw in a bunch of willie nelson records).

the cone is in roughish shape with few not great looking repairs.

the difference in sound is huge! much more detail, more highs and lows, and a nice feel all around. i haven't tried it with the telecaster yet, but with the ldg it sounds superb.

there's a very faint sizzle like tube rattling on a few notes. if i hadn't just replaced the speaker i would suspect the tubes. is this indicative of a speaker needing reconing?

Probably the voice coil is rubbing a bit. It might've gotten "overstressed" at some point.
