I visited Speedy at his home in Broken Arrow, Oklahoma. and he told me this story:
When he was practically living in the recording studios, in California, and in high demand, he was often required to read music. The problem was, he couldn't read a note. What he would do when the producer would say, "strike bar 34", or whatever", was to pretend that he was making the correction.
