WTB Zumsteel Stage One or Encore

Hi everyone! Looking at getting into pedal steel for my band's next record. I already play dobro and lap steel, but the lap steel just won't cut it for the new sound - I need the levers and E9 tuning to get that twangy bend. I've been crawling over the forums and the general consensus seems to be that a beginner on a budget should try to get his/her hands on a Stage One by Doug. I checked out his website and loved the audio samples I heard.

Price wise, by the time I fix up my entire fleet of instruments for the studio, my max budget including shipping or travel is $1000 (I'd love less, so I could potentially buy lessons). I wish I could throw more at a true Pro instrument but it's just not a possibility right now. The Stage One seems like it can definitely get the job done, can be purchased within my budget, and will hold it's value if ever want to upgrade.

Unfortunately, we hit the studio sooner rather than later and I'd like to start learning ASAP. Any tips or leads would be appreciated! I live in the Atlanta area and wouldn't mind a road trip to any surrounding states if that's what it takes.

UPDATE: Now, that I know more from conversations with you wonderful people, looking for a used S10 e9 Stage One under $1000, or possibly an Encore or GFI Expo as close to $1000 as I can get it.

You know, I have thought about this, but I am confident in my ability to learn the instrument and really want to be the one in studio doing the tracking. Our recording schedule and workflow may be a little whacky and I want plenty of time to experiment...call me a perfectionist . I am definitely keeping this idea in my back pocket though.

Blake, I'm no expert but have bought and sold a few. based on what you said if you can get a Stage One shipped to you for less than 1000 dollars I would jump on it.

I would love to but one hasn't been up for sale in a while! If you hear of anything I would greatly appreciate it. I also might be willing to shell out a bit more for an Encore or GFI expo...

I don't sell these guitars, I traded for one a while back and I am very impressed with it. I have been involved with steel guitars for over 50 years, and these are the best value I have seen in a steel guitar, and I think I've seen them all by now.
