| I've been digging into E13th lately and loving it. I haven't really settled on a favorite version, though, and I'm curious to hear what you other E13th fans are using and why. Does it give you certain chord voicings you especially like? A certain tone you like? Is it just what you're used to? Inquiring minds want to know... |

I use [hi] E C# B G# F# D B E [lo] but sometimes change the low B to G#. In one band that is just guitar bass drums and steel I need that low B for guitar-type backup licks that I need to play when the guitar is taking a lead. Dual Professional through a Tweed Bassman 4 ten sounds like a Tele!
One another I do have G#EC#BG#F#DB but move the D to C# and F# to E and even low B to A when I need to Hank it. |

Here's what I settled on and works very well for me. The reason why I prefer this version is that I play pedals also and am used to the the F# and D# on top . This allows me to retain the same advantages it adds to the standard E9th. My non pedal guitar is a nine string triple neck, with C6th on the bottom neck, E13th (chromatic) on the middle neck and A6th on the outside.

I tune 5th string either to E (for Hawaiian usually) and F# depending on tune (Western Swing stuff).
I tune 6th string usually to D, but go to C# for things like Stardust.
The pedal version I use on Emmons:
G# E C# B G# F# E D B E Which I can play with no pedals or with pedals as I choose.

Vance Terry's E13 is what I use . High to low :
E
C#
B
G#
F#
D
B
G#
I do not like the sound or feel of string gauges higher than a 14 or 15, so that rules out the G# on top for me. Plus having the 3 on top (G#) is too similar to the 6th tunings I use.
I like my tunings to have different voices from each other. And the chords and partial chords available on this E 13 are many and unique.
Having an E in the middle is too country sounding for me , so I omit that. Tho I can see the merits for lead and chord playing.
The low B is the 5 , which helps since the 5(6th) chord is seated in the 1 position. It is very useful to have for back up , lead and harmony playing.
I have used a low E in place of the low G# , but it is a big sting gauge jump , and It only works well for me as a power chord thing.
Also with the low G# you have the low 3 strings of dim. chord ( 8,7,6) and the fourth note a half step flat on the 5ths string.
A lot of the guys I am inspired by used an E13 that is similar.... Koefer, Boggs,Vance, Leon,Bowman ect.

That looks like my dream extension of Leon... a 5 in the bottom and a 1 in the middle. Wanting ten now!
I love the Leon E13... having to dip for the 1 in the middle gives the 'blue' note b3rd slide up, you can grip a sus4 (1,3,5) or aug (2,4,6), the middle four create a very fat 7/9, lots of other stuff hiding in there. And it sounds great as a full strum!
