Dave,
I said it before in an email, but will say it again here. Great band, nice video, and excellent steel and piano.
Keep 'em coming.
Best,
Bob |

I love it. What string gauges do you use, and where did you get them? _________________ Some songs I've written |

This is a bit of a drift, but under the "Links" then to "Articles" b0b has an extremely useful string gauge chart -
http://www.b0b.com/infoedu/gauges.htm
These gauges my run a bit heavy on something other than a 22" scale pedal steel, but they're still really useful. The values remain accurate relative to each other - you can just knock a few thousandths off for a longer scale. With this you can figure up ANY tuning - I cut 'n' pasted this into a word processing program and then kept printing copies until I couldn't NOT find one somewhere. It works for odd guitar tunings, mandolins etc. |

Really great playing and a fantastic band and music.
I was less impressed with the sound of the fiberglass dobro which just didn't seem to have any punch and resonance to it. While the playing was great, it just didn't have that dobro sound that I love. |

You know I've heard the same comment before about the tone. It doesn't have the punch of my Deneve 6 string but I kinda like having something different. I don't have the string gauges yet but I usually buy strings in sets from "JUst Strings". |

Sorry David but I have to agree that something is not right on your Melobro. I was really embarrassed when I heard the tone on the video. I wish I had a video to put mine on line here tuned to E open with 3x the punch that has using my bare fingers.
There were only three of those 7/8's built but they certainly didn't sound like that when they left the shop years ago. I think you have either the cone and spider turned slightly, wrong string gauge, or the half moon down pressure piece on the back of the cover plate not set up right.
The fiberglass is so smooth after we used the glass plate sander to true the sound hole that the cone can turn slightly which kills the sound. Take a pencil (eraser toward the cone in case you drop it) and turn it ever so slightly (you can check the scale length on both sides of the spider for straight)pick the strings as you do this and see if at pitch you hear it suddenly ring harmonically better (it will be pretty obvious if you listen), second the string gauges have to be heavy enough to power that 8-string spider which does take more pressure and is part of the reason for the half moon on the back of the cover plate that the strings go under and can be tightened with more downward angle pressure.
If those don't work shoot it over to me - Something is way not right and even though I have no financial benefit from fixing it, I want you to get the best sound guy - use the melobarted@gmail.com to get a hold of me.
Otherwise the rest was great...going to have that tune and syncopation stuck in my head for the rest of the night _________________ old Melobar guy |
