Wait a minute, did I hear you say you're going far away again... this would be Johnny Rivers with a Herb Pederson song.

JOHNNY RIVERS?!?!?!

Naah. Joachim, here's the band that (I think) recorded it first (Herb Pedersen pitched it to the Scene) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wigjZ7ng_tc
Mike Auldridge on Dobro, and a buncha other fine folks

BTW, I know I've heard the song you mention with the line "am I hearing the sound of goodbye", but other than it being a bluegrass thing from the early to mid-80s, I got nothing.
I KNOW I've heard it, and it's not Wait A Minute.
Wish I could help. My mind's ear tells me it's likely either the Country Gazette or the Dillards, because I'm hearing "stacked harmonies" in my head and only them two did that as a regular gimmick. Probably Dillards, since my mind's ear isn't hearing Roland's distinctive voice.

There was an earlier song, "The Sound of Goodbye" from 1968, which was the title song of the only album by the Gosden Brothers. It was also one of the earlier songs cut that was written by Eddie Rabbitt, before he became a recording artist himself.

Great album, lots of Clarence White guitar from before he joined the Byrds.

Pete, that's the one I'm thinking of, pretty sure a bluegrass band covered it about a decade or so later.
Dennis, is this it?
