Padded Picks

There appears to be some interest in me getting back in the production of padded picks. I need to see if it is enough for me to start up again. I usually order the picks in quantities of 100 so as to make it possible for me to cover my expenses. I have always used Nationals and Dunlops. I need to hear from some of you to see if I should start processing them again.

Which ones do you prefer? Before it seemed to be a toss up between Nationals and Dunlops. Also on the Dunlops I offered both .025 and .022 thicknesses. Since I will need to inventory several of these, I'd like to know which ones to order. Thanks for your input.

Hello Doug.It's been quite a few years since we last saw and spoke to each other. I hope you're doing well.

What are the differences between the Nationals and Dunlops? What thickness are the Nationals?

Also, are these actually padded, or are they the powder coated ones you sold a few years ago.

Finally, what was the name of the gentleman who made the powder coated ones before you, who passed away? I bought some from him, which I still have.

These are plastic double coated picks. Andy Hinton sold the same type of coated picks. I don't know the thickness of the nationals, but they are the standard NP2's. The dunlops are .025 and .022.

Is there any interest in Dunlop brass picks with a thickness of .0225? Here are some pics of my picks from before.

We should up and running in about two weeks. The wholesale pick prices have gone up as well as postage.
So here's what it looks like price wise. National NP2 picks will be $12.00 including shipping to the US and Canada for the first pair and $5.00 per pick for the any additional Nationals if shipped at the same time. In other words, for a 4 pick order, the price will be $22.00.
For Dunlop picks the price will be $10.00 for the first pair including shipping to the US and Canada and then $4.00 per pick for any additional Dunlop picks shipped with the same order. In other words if you order 4 Dunlop picks, the price will be $18.00. We will be using Paypal as the method of payment.

I don't mean to be a horses butt, but you can go to Lowe's in the spray paint department, and get a can of plastic dip and make your own padded picks. One can cost about six or seven dollars enough to make a whole lot of padded picks.

That's absolutely true. You are not being a horses butt. However, in doing this, you must first get the machine oil off of the picks which requires using naptha or something similar. They need to be perfectly clean or the coating will come off in a short period of time. Also they must be completely dry from the cleaning and then you can begin to coat them. Wait at least 48 hours between coats so the the first coat can cure. You should put on two coats. I like to wait 3 or 4 days as I want them to be good and cured so that they will last a good long while. It took me a while to learn this as I made some mistakes along the way. I am doing this again because several people have asked me to do it. I do not make much on this but enjoy doing it as a service to my fellow musicians. As an example, NP2 picks cost me about $2.00 per pick plus shipping. Then of course the naptha, coating, packaging and postage must be added to that. So as you can see it's mostly to help my fellow pickers. Please understand I am not offended if you do it on your own. I have told you how I process the picks. Have a great day!!! I did forget another thing. In doing your own, you will need to get the viscosity right. Usually you will need to thin the coating in the can some. Although not all manufacturers provide the same viscosity. I do appreciate your interest and will continue to provide the same great service as I did in the past.
