I wanted so use my McIntosh mc50 rather than the power amp in my twin so I hooked up a broken 8 ohm 12" JBL speaker to the amps speaker output and ran the Mac off the the amps line out. The speaker cone was torn so I just cut it off and left the dust cap, partially for safety and also so I can hear tiny bit of sound just to know the voice coil is still working. That's the cone less speaker and the Mac in the milk crate.

I think that is similar to the concept of the Weber Mass thingy.

Ok for a line output, but if you are using it as an attenuator you are in danger of toasting your output transformer Smile

How would I attempt to use it as an attenuator?

Brett,
While it is a neat idea, operating the voice coil assembly the way you are doing it similar to running an engine without a load, or flywheel. It will probably work at low power levels, but without the load, the power normally used to move the cone and the air, now has no place to go and stays in the voice coil. Any more than very low power will probably overheat the coil and melt a wire.
