My Rose Of Waikiki

Post by Derrick Mau »

Just starting to do my own recordings and working on a solo steel album.
Here's a sample of one I just completed.

Rickenbacker 7 string bakelite. C13th tuning.
I'm playing all instruments.

How 'bout that?

Very nice Derrick!

What kind of amp were you playing thro'; or, were you going direct into the board?

How long did you study with Mr. Byrd?

Beautiful! A favorite of mine. Your harmonics are outstanding--clear and bell-like. I'll look forward to your album.

Thanks everyone, glad you liked it.

Ray, I mic all my instruments instead of going direct. Big difference, like night and day.

For the steel, I'm using a Roland Micro Cube, Brit Combo setting. Shure SM80, and a True Systems P-Solo preamp.
Tones can vary greatly depending on which steel, amp, mic, and preamp combo you're using.

Never learnt steel from Jerry.
I've learnt by listening to old vinyls with steel material.

I'll be buy that CD for sure. Derrick, your live recording of Pu'uanahulu is still a favourite of mine. Is that a real set of vibes in the background? Interesting that you are using a Roland Microcube. Recently, I bought a Roland Street, its a little twin angle up at about 40 degrees. The tone on the clean setting is magic.

Aloha Skip,

Yeah that was me with Jeff and Bobby.
Remember when shopping mall secruity kicked us out for playing Hawaiian music? Haha!

Dave, the vibes were done with my Yamaha CP-50 through a Roland monitor instead of the Cube and was also mic'd.

Aloha Don Fullmer, Don Woods, and Bill! :D
Hope to see you all soon.

Beautiful Derrick! Love that tune and used to play it but haven't in a long time. You inspired me to plug in my Bakelite and play along. Thanks for the inspiration!

Beautiful Derrick!
I'm with you on playing all the instruments when recording Hawaiian tunes.
Inspires me to dust off my old guitar synth and add some vibes to some of my recordings.
Wonderful tone and harmonics!

Eh Derrick - I also use a MicroCube in the same setting that you use! I love it, for the sound and for the fact that it fits in my suitcase when I go on the road. See you in a month. - Jack

Aloha Jack,

Yeah, the Micro Cube is good too for gigs. Easy on the back. The CLEAN setting is excellent too.

My 1953 Fender Triple 8 however really needs the big daddy (Fender Twin or Reverb) to bring out the lower strings.

I've been searching for one of the old Roland Monitors. Hard to find, but the tone is magic.
Here's Bud Tutmarc using it.
