Hey all,
Just joined the forum today! I've been a guitarist for 17 years and now I've decided to learn pedal steel. A buddy of mine said he'd give me free lessons! Even though I don't know how to play yet, I bought a Show Pro Lloyd Green model. My buddy says I bought a cadillac! LOL I am serious about learning this instrument and wanted a really good one. It will only inspire me to practice more. I'm still waiting on having it built, so I don't have it yet. I will also need an amp. I was reading up on the Webb amps, and they look and sound very nice from what I heard on YouTube. A lot of people use the Peavey Nashville 112. My buddy has a power amp with a Peavey Pro Fex and 15' cab. I am looking forward to knowing people on here and learning as much as I can. Any advice you have, I'd appreciate it!

Welcome to the fraternity! I have the N112 and like it, not too heavy, and great sound. I also use a Li'l Izzy impedance box between the guitar and volume pedal, it really makes the GFI I have sparkle.

Hey Jason,
Welcome aboard ! You can't go wrong with a Sho Pro ! I wish I had one. Jeff is a great guy and does awesome work on those beautiful guitars. I have Webb and Evans amps at the music store you can play thru. I would love to check the new Sho Pro out as well, then I'll have to have one of my own without telling my wife. lol

Welcome Jason, this is a great place to start from. Everyone is more than glad to help and contribute to a Noob or anyone else for that matter. As for equipment, that is a matter of taste and selection that can only be filled by you. Main thing is to have fun with it and sharpen up on your patience. You are going to need it. Learn first and buy bells and whistles later. ( someday you'll thank me for that little piece of advice)  Happy Steelin' |

This works great for me, and is lighter to move than an amp. Also you have a great way to mix your guitar with your practice tracks. If you are looking to start out right, buy a good tube amp. While heavy, buying a vintage Fender tube amp (not a reissue) is IMO the best way to go. So many steel players have gone thru playing all kinds of amps only to come back to these. Lloyd Green plays now (still) plays thru a vintage Fender Twin Reverb. Steve Fishell plays thru a vintage (not reissue) 1965 Fender TR. Best TR amps are 1971 and earlier. Even if it needs to be gone thru with new filter caps and tubes, if you buy it right, it is a good investment that you will get your money back on if you ever decide to sell it. Surf around the forum using the terms Fender Twin and you can read what everyone thinks about them.

Well Jason, you've certainly got one. I don't own a Sho-Pro, but I've heard that they are excellent steels. As for amps, the vintage Twin Reverbs sound really good. My only concern is headroom. I have a '72 Twin Reverb with the original JBL D120F orange speakers. At a low volume it is, as Lloyd Green put it, a glorious sounding amp. But when I increase the volume, it begins to distort a little. While some steel players like this sound, I don't. I could mike the amp and keep the volume down, but instead, I choose to use a Nashville 400. It has a LOT of headroom and is a very versatile amp. It's a work horse. To my ears, it produces a great sound. Clean lows and highs that are very clear. To give you an idea of how they sound, Paul Franklin used one (miked and in a recording studio) when he recorded To Cold At Home with Mark Chestnut. But the main thing is lots of practice! Welcome to the Forum!
That is one of the loveliest Show Pros I've seen, btw. I'd say that was a Gibson-inspired sunburst and quite beautifully done. Excellent score on the guitar, it is a Cadillac.
As to an amp, I can afford any one I want, but choose to play a Nashville 112 with a Telonics Neo 12" speaker for all my gigs. Low weight and great tone. My kind of amp.

Welcome to the brotherhood Jason  , That has got to be one of the most beautifully done Show-pro's I have seen, Jeff outdid Himself there!!!.
As for Your request for gear recommendations, +1 for the NV112, Mine has an 8Ohm Black widow paper dome and I just throw a Zoom MS50-G Multi-effect stompbox in line with some delay, Reverb and EQ...however, I would just recommend the 112 for You for now.
The one personal recommendation I have though...is a
"Telonics" FP-100 multi taper volume pedal, They're a bit pricey I'll admit but You will NEVER deal with better folks then Dave and Sophie.
Just My two cents, but Welcome and enjoy the steelin'!!!!
