Hi,
My thumb is seriously swollen and inflamed from using a pick that was too tight. At my doctor's advice I am taking Aleve and treating the thumb with ice.
I would appreciate any advice or comments from those who have been through this.
I have ditched the tight pick, of course.
Thanks,
Bob |

Just curious Bob, were you using a metal thumb pick by chance? It's hard to imagine a plastic one pinching that tight. I use a plastic National thumb pick myself with zero irritation (I use a Lg. I believe, I haven't bought a new one in so long). _________________ GFI Ultra U-12 7+5 E9/B6, Roland Cube 80XL, Telonics FP-100 Volume pedal with TMRS remote sensor (courtesy of Dave Beaty and Telonics) |

Hi,
It all started when my favorite thumb pick broke. I bought a variety of new plastic picks, including Zookies. I really liked that offset blade, which was new to me.
The pick I used to "do myself an injury" (as the Scots say) was a plastic Zookie Large 20-degree offset blade.
I knew it was way too tight but kept using it anyhow while wood shedding heavily and gigging. Really stupid!
My thumb is very swollen, the nail is turning blue, all the wrinkles are gone from the knuckle, and the pain is pretty intense. It has kept me awake for two nights.
I have learned a tough lesson.
And I have also learned how to bend (open up) thumb picks by dipping them in hot water. |
