| Well maybe Neil Young's recollection of Jerry Garcia's infamous steel track on "Teach your Children" might be skewed, but I think Graham Nash's recollection of the same session might help bring clarity to the conversation. His new autobiography, "Wild Tales", talks of the session on page 175 in detail, including Stephen Stills changing the original feel to a more country approach and Jerry playing pedal steel guitar. Jerry's first take is what made it on the album and Graham calls his track " one of the defining elements in that recording". Defining element indeed. |

I corresponded with Stephen Quinn Barncard, who was the engineer on the "Teach" session, and asked him for any recollections about the session for the forum and he wrote:
"We used a comp of the 2 takes. Graham should remember that, as we revisited the 16 track for the box set. Neil's "recollection" was totally skewed. I doubt if Neil was even there, and for sure Bill Halverson, the recordist for the project was not there, even though he says he was. Old guys.
I remember Nash walking around the studio like a troubadour, playing it over and over again. And it was a PEDAL steel. We popped into Studio D for 15 minutes because C was already set up for tracking."
I was the fricking assistant and got to do it, my second big artist recordist experience, sink or swim. Neil was barely at most of the sessions, usually just for tracking and didn't hang out, Stills was there more than anyone except me. I would have to be there 1 hr before to set up and 1 hr after the session to tear down. Sometimes Stills would be up all night fueled by blow and we'd be there until 6 or 7 am. No lockouts and Creedence in the daytime 10-6. I might see Wally in the morning and he saw me and said "Double time after 13 hours..."
Stephen also writes "it was done in 5 minutes. SM56 ---> UREI/Demedio preamp ---> UA 1176 in Studio D".
