What is the nearest equivalent in Fender guitar pickups to the cable pedal steel pickups? They look a bit like Jaguar pickups, from a distance, at least...

| Both the Strat and Tele pickups are very close to the 400 and 1000 pedal steel pickups, though the pedal steel pickups are somewhat "fatter" and louder. Most of the difference in the sound of a Tele and a Strat comes from the body and bridge, not from the pickups used. |

The earlier Fender steels used what was essentially an eight string Jazzmaster pickup, made with a lower and wider coil for a more mellow sound than a coil that is tall and narrow. I have had one 400 that actually had a stacked coil Jazzmaster with longer magnets and a third layer of bobbin flatwork separating the coils.
The later pickups were essentially Jaguar pickups with a coil that was taller and narrower than a Jazzmaster for what would be a brighter sound if all other variables were equal. The pickup had a metal surround on the sides of the bobbin that was designed to focus the pickup's attention to the strings.

Was the pickup on Kleinow`s Fender the Jazzmaster or tha Jaguar -type?

Sneaky Pete's original pickup was Jazzmaster. Was the one he added the same, I wondered. Seeing the photo Michael Maddex placed in the next post, the answer is Yes.

When we opened for Pete and the Burritos in '75, I was on
stage and took a close look at his old Fender. At that time
there were two narrower pickups...almost strat size though.
I thought it looked kinda strange. He also had a Showman head into a ? cabinet. |

Jay, is this possibly the guitar that you saw?
That photo is from the second issue of Steel Guitarist Magazine. Sorry for the image quality. If you have a copy of the magazine, you can see a little clearer version.
I don't know for sure, but I believe that Pete probably had more than one old Fender. Jim Sliff might be able to give us some definitive answers. I think that the first photo that I posted may have come from him. HTH.
