Review of the CD "Mirage" by Ellery Eskelin, Michael Formanek, and myself:

Lots of new adjectives, and they spelled our names right!

Down beat ! The amazing thing to me is how they managed to talk about the Pedalsteel without mentioning country music . Now that is a big move forward.

Congrats on a successful project working with some of the best improvisers on the planet.

Thanks, Bob. That kind of surprised me too, though I think that had there been more column width, they'd have made the obligatory country connection, something about evoking the wide open spaces on the West, or how unusual it is that it's not a C&W sound (I personally don't think it's all that unusual). What self-respecting music writer would omit this if they had the chance?

This is a fantastic CD. Three improvisers at the top of their craft. Susan, I am a great fan of yours, but I've been a fan of Michael Formanek for a long time. To me, he is one of the great composers today.

I'm not surprised at the lack of a country connection by the reviewer--it really doesn't exist in the music, so I'm glad he came to it without any preconceived notions. Frankly, it is not that unusual of a sound in jazz, since Frisell has been indoctrinating jazz lovers' ears to a similar timbre for years. Many guitarists today have embraced that sound.
