Post by George Buechley »

Hey Dick,
The Li'l Izzy sounds great with the Cube 80XL using the settings you showed me. By the way, did you get a new amp?

Craig,
Thanks for the great deal on the Li'l Izzy (inside joke). It works great. Love the sound.

Best regards,
George

Cube 80 XL settings

Post by George Buechley »

Hi Craig,
I have the Cube 80 XL set at bass @3 o'clock, mid @11 o'clock, treble @1 o'clock, presence @1 o'clock; black panel using the lead side with gain at zero, volume at whatever you want; reverb plate @ midway or to taste; and delay set at whatever. I connect the Izzy directly into my GFI then to Hilton vp then Cube. I'm using Live Steel strings. It sounds really really good!

Well George, it sounds like you've made good choices and you're doing everything right. I really like the Live Steel Strings also. They have excellent sound, stay in tune, and they almost never break.

Li'l Izzy... Good As Old !

Post by Craig Baker »

Hi Kevin.
With a Li'l Izzy from the early 80's, you may wish to invest in a new 9-volt battery LOL. Every now and then we hear about a Li'l Izzy from the late 70's or early 80's still in use. It's like finding a long lost friend, so please let us know how it works.

Each Li'l Izzy is always supposed to keep quiet and behave properly.

Sincerely,
Craig Baker 706-485-8792

Li'l Izzy

Post by Craig Baker »

Craig,
Just went you a PM.

Roger,
Looks like an excellent way to protect your cords from possible damage.

It's my view that all steel guitars should have the output jack located under the right rear corner of the instrument to keep the cord neat and out of the way.

Thanks for sharing your pictures.

Last weekend I played a jam with the hookup Mr. Baker suggested. I plugged the Izzy into the steel, out of the Izzy into the pedal, out of the pedal to the Black Box and out of Black Box into the amp. My delay is run on the Posssst EQ loop. My steel was so clean and clear and I have not had such a great sound in a long time. Thanks Mr. Baker and Brad Sarno for making such great products.

From pickup to speaker

Thank you Paul.
Your good words are always appreciated. I believe Brad recommends the Black Box before the volume pedal. You'd probably drive the Black Box's tube better that way, and see an improved signal-to-noise ratio. However, with the equipment you're using, it would be hard to not sound good.
Thank you again Paul.

Mr. Baker, Are you suggesting to come out of the Izzy into the Black Box and then into the pedal? I will give it a try and see what happens.

Paul,
Yes, It seems to me that the Black Box would operate better before the volume pedal. I don't think you'll get the full advantage of the Black Box if you place it after the pedal.
Please let us know what differences you hear.

Recomended order is izzy BB and reverb the last thing before your amp after your V pedal

From reading Brad's writings about the Black Box, I'd think about the following order:
Steel-BB-VP-Izzy-amp.
The BB wants to be the first thing after the pickup (Yeah, so does the Izzy)
2 pedal steels, a lapStrat, and an 8-string Dobro (and 3 ukes)
More amps than guitars, and not many effects

Seems its dealers choice on how someone wants to use something, Izzy BB dist pedal telonics V pedal wet reverb amp has been working great for me

Lane,
If you have one Li'l Izzy, you'll hear the greatest improvement connecting it directly to the pickup. If you have two, the second Li'l Izzy can instantly convert your pot-type pedal into an active pedal, with even more improvement in sound, but with Li'l Izzy, you won't have the pleasure of tripping over a power supply cord.

Consider a scale of 1 to 10. 10=perfect tone. A well-designed buffer right at the pickup will give you 8. A pot-type pedal followed by a similar buffer at the pedal’s output will provide the remaining 2. Most guitars produce excellent sound and beautiful overtones. Best to let the pickup produce all of the music it can, unrestricted. Remember, we're only transferring voltage here so there is no need to "match" impedance. The impedance of a guitar's pickup is constantly varying with the notes or chords being played, so there is no "correct load" With high impedance pickups, even the best guitar cords will dull the sound and all of that beautiful tone you paid for, will never reach the amplifier.

Roger,
I like the way you think. If plugging Li'l Izzy right into the pickup is good enough for Tommy White, Garry Carter, Roger Francis and Mike Cass, that plan should work for most players.

Best personal regards,
