First I want to thank the steel player from Stockton that came to see me play last night. I'm sorry I don't remember your name. It was great meeting you.
After 42 years of playing pedal steel, I am forced to sell out all of my equipment soon to get money to pay the rent for next month. It just dawned on me this morning how hard that is going to be on me.
I really want to thank all the friends I have made on here. I will probably not be around here much after that. Too much like getting a divorce and then going and hanging around the ex-wives house. The steel guitar has been such a big part of my life for so long, it's hard to give it up.
To those that use my website to access Mickey Adam's YouTube instruction videos, John Scanlon, who originally came up with the idea, is taking over for me and will keep the "sticky" on the "Steel On The Web" updated with links. I will be taking down my website soon.
Again, Thanks everyone. You have all made my life a little brighter.
Please don't fill this thread with sympathy comments and suggestions. It is not what I posted this for. After the pain of having to quit playing wears off, I will probably pop in here from time to time.
EDIT: Luckily, I get to play 3 last gigs this week. And they are all classic country gigs. Woo Hoo. _________________ Carter D10 8p/8k, Dekley S10 3p/4k C6 setup,Regal RD40 Dobro, Recording King Professional Dobro, NV400, NV112,Ibanez Gio guitar, Epiphone SG Special (open D slide guitar) . Richard,
It was a pleasure meeting you at your gig last night as well. I had placed the date on my calendar weeks ago after seeing it listed on your website; I was looking forward to getting to know a fellow steeler and a prominent forumite (kinda rare in NorCal). When I checked the site later to confirm you were still on, I was aghast to read your hard times/retirement notice.
I enjoyed your fine playing and our conversation on the break; I just wish I could have offered something more than complements and encouragement to hang in there. You seemed so resigned to your fate, even saying that you already have a sale lined up for your beloved gear. What stuck me the most was hearing you say that after 42 years of playing, you were having the most fun and really enjoying being a musician.
Richard, I'm sure every member that hears this news would echo my sentiments that there has to be another way out of the bind you're in; after all, parting with your gear might pay the rent this month, but what about the next? The landlord will still be there, but your Carter won't. To repeat what I said last night (my Dad's most important life lesson) "Never sell your assets to cover your ass".
I'm sure you have thought this through, but I'm also sure we all hope this is not the last we hear from Richard Sinkler.
Best regards,

My wife and I have both looked death in the face, being survivors of Breast and Prostate cancer. Then on top of that, I was nearly killed in a bad car wreck, a year later. I obviously don't know your situation, but for me, Prayer has worked in the most extreme situations. I know you said, no suggestions, but I'm just trying to give you some hope, where it looks like there is none. |

I hate to read where a fellow steel player is forced to sell his equiptment to pay bills. Cost of living is so high these day I am surpised we do not see it more. My heart goes out to you knowing you have spent many years playing. I send best wishes to you and I pray that things in your life will make a drastic turn where you can keep playing. |

I would sell a kidney before I would sell my gear !!
I can't imagine not being able to play for any reason so whatever your circumstances Richard -- put your thinking cap on mate, there's got to be a better way - at least with your gear you can earn money !! without it your up the proverbial s**t creek mate. _________________ 14'Zumsteel Hybrid D10 9+9

sell all your gear to pay a months rent??.. Gear thats making money for you???.. Sorry Richard, I sympathize, honestly I do, and wish you all the best luck, but that makes NO sense..
Ok, you sell all your steel gear, and make the rent this month... OK, what about next month, and the month after.. Will all your money problems be solved by a one time sale of your gear?... No, of course not..
If you are good enough to play out regularly and make money, you need your tools.. What you just said is this..
" I am a good auto mechanic, but I don't have the money for this months rent, so I must sell all my tools"..
Not logical...really its not..
I was on your site, and you are a fine player, and you need to keep playing, somehow.. Personally, I would keep the gear at a friends place, and start looking for a cheaper place to live.. something, anything but selling all your steel gear.
If rent and daily living expenses are too high where you are, get out and go somewhere where its more affordable. The last thing to do is sell off the instruments that are making you money, at a time when you need money.
In any case, I wish you all the best . bob _________________ I'm over the hill and hittin'rocks on the way down!

The situation is like this. If I don't have rent money, I am then homeless. I have no other means of getting the money. I have no where to go. The money I make playing music basically covers utilities and gas to get to the gigs. I will basically be "buying" another month to keep up my search for a day job. I HAVE thought this through. I see no other way right now. I wish there was, but I just can't see one.
I have looked for rooms to rent. The one's I have talked to won't rent to you unless you have a good job, and even run credit checks on you now, which I won't pass. Other's don't want a musician in the their house that comes in at 3 or 4 in the morning and has to bring in their equipment and make noise. Rooms in this area are fairly close to what I pay in rent now, and music money is not always enough to cover the amounts, depending on how many gigs I have that month. _________________ Carter D10 8p/8k, Dekley S10 3p/4k C6 setup,Regal RD40 Dobro, Recording King Professional Dobro, NV400, NV112,Ibanez Gio guitar, Epiphone SG Special (open D slide guitar) . I will pop in here again after a while. Even without a guitar, I will always be a steel guitar player. Gene... Not sure I understand the comment about "marital problems". I am not married (don't even have a girlfriend or date). I have been divorced for 10 years now, and my former marriage doesn't have anything to do with my current situation. _________________ Carter D10 8p/8k, Dekley S10 3p/4k C6 setup,Regal RD40 Dobro, Recording King Professional Dobro, NV400, NV112,Ibanez Gio guitar, Epiphone SG Special (open D slide guitar) . Just want to say before this thing gets closed that Richard's input on various subjects, and his participation in what is now the Mickey Adams project, have been especially helpful to me. I've never met you in person, Richard, but I am glad to have gotten to know you somewhat on here, and I wish you well in the future, and hope for a quick return to the steel world. _________________ Click here for the Index to Mickey Adams's YouTube video lessons
