Saw this write up in the Alabama paper, thought ya'll would like to read. met Jody when he first arrived in Mobile, Alabama, in 1966. We were working gigs across town at the time and we got to know each other very well. Great guitarist

Death of Baldwin County guitarist Jody Payne, longtime sideman to Willie Nelson, makes national news.
Longtime Willie Nelson guitarist Jody Payne told the Press-Register in 2011 that he didn't miss life on the road. “I miss the guys and I miss the sound, but I don’t miss the bus,” he said. “It got to where you knew what city you were in because of what the auditorium looked like, not what the city looked like.”
MOBILE, Alabama – The death of Baldwin County resident Jody Payne has made news in Rolling Stone and other national music publications, thanks to his long association with country legend Willie Nelson.
According to an obituary published on www.AL.com, Payne died early Saturday morning at age 77 of cardiac problems, according to Baldwin County Coroner Stan Vinson. Vinson said Payne, a Stapleton resident, had awakened feeling ill and had been taken to a hospital by ambulance before his death.
By Monday the news was featured at www.rollingstone.com, which briefly described his musical education: “The shaggy, Kentucky-born guitarist was a skilled country and bluegrass player from an early age; his first teachers included legendary pickers Merle Travis and Charlie Monroe. He also recorded at Motown Records and played with Ray Price and Merle Haggard before teaming up with Nelson from 1973 through 2008.”
Rolling Stone writer Erin Coulehan wrote that “Payne's twangy Telecaster and gruff voice complemented Nelson's clean vocals and nylon-stringed stabbing – their duet of "Working Man's Blues" was a highlight for years.”
Industry news site www.billboard.com also noted Payne’s passing. At www.willienelson.com, Payne’s death was greeted “with a heavy heart.” The site indicated that Payne’s former bandmates did not expect a public funeral, but looked forward to “a possible memorial later this year.”
In recent years, Payne had retired from active touring. A 2011 Press-Register profile by Jim Hannaford described him as playing occasional gigs, teaching lessons at Picker’s Paradise in Stapleton and generally taking advantage of time to relax and enjoy life with his wife, Vicki.
According to that interview, Payne’s local roots date back to the 1960s, when he’d performed and even ran a Causeway bar, Jody Payne’s Crystal Palace.
Of his long collaboration with Nelson, Payne said: “We created musical history. It wasn’t me, it was us. … I was just a small part of something people wanted to hear, and we entertained them.”
