hey guys, those three screws connecting the pups to the aluminum necks...are springs supposed to be inserted on the screw between the pup flange and the underside of the neck?? thanks

Hi Steve,
Yes, there should be a compression spring segment approx. 3/8" long just between the mounting plate and the bottom of the neck. You should use 1/8" long spacers under the pickup bottom plate. Typically they are aluminum spacers just like the ones used on the push/pull rods.

thanks Lynn. I suppose I should have slipped those c. springs in there BEFORE re-attaching the necks eh?
now the trick is to get em in there with necks on. Those springs or some of them were not in there or had fallen out at some point. The ones that were found seem to be the same stiff comp. springs that are used for the pull rods. That seems to me to be unnecessarily stiff for the pup mounting needs, am I wrong?
I'm not understanding how the 1/8" spacers work UNDER the pickup mount plate...in any case id have to remove the necks again to include those ...there attached to the ends of the screws under the pickup bottom plate correct?

Steve,
You certainly don't need to use those fairly stiff factory compression springs but that is what the factory uses, so I recommend the same ones. No need to remove the necks! Once the pickup is out of the way, you should be able to insert the springs using your fingers or needle nose pliers while installing the adjustment screws. What I said was "use 1/8" long spacers under the pickup bottom plate". The spacers provide clearance for the lead wire between the adjustable aluminum mounting plate and the pickup bottom plate. The factory also uses a spare mounting plate to provide the initial pickup height adjustment under the strings.

I removed the necks in order to resurface them
which where done btw as instructed by Mike Cass to the letter with great results. Now they're ready for new fret boards. |
