re:New handle for case

Post by Mike Kowalik »

Need some suggestions folks...my case for my steel need a new handle....the case is in reasonably good shape so no need to buy a new one....the handle is reduced to the metal framework that would normally be coverd with rubber...it's very difficult to carry the steel in the case as the edges of the metal handle cuts and pinches my hand...anybody have a suggestion as to how to fix this problem?

Well, how about recovering it with a piece of rubber garden hose.. Or just replace it with a new handle.

A piece of rubber hose is a good idea, unless it is not easily possible to get the handle apart to slip it on. In that case, wrapping the handle with a few layers of vinyl tape or some other kind of tape might be an easy solution.

....no great decision here. Replace the handle Mike. Don't become another slob by going for the quickest fix. It's the case for your instrument and it should look decent.

There is too much butchered equipment out there all ready.

Surface Mount Handle $6
This vendor charges an extra $5 for orders under $50. Still worth it, unless you can find the item elsewhere.

I've replaced them with Fender amp handles, available at most music stores and very easy on the hand.

I replaced mine with three handles. Got them at the local hadrware. Put the other two between the latches, using two hands sure make it easy to lift and carry up and down stairs. Also loading it in and out of the trunk. Well you know some of us are not 21 anymore.

Tape it up, it's just a case.

I have found that a rather long handle, like those on fender amplifiers, makes carrying a little easier since it puts less strain on your hand, especially if it´s a heavy guitar.
Two extra handles of the plain rounded metal type are also a good idea since you can lift it with both hands. I have two rather heavy ShoBuds, one case has the long handle and the other has two and it´s definitely better than the original.

I've fixed handles like the ones on Fender guitar cases when they get like that by going to a hobby/craft shop and getting some 1/8" sheet black neoprene rubber(wetsuit type material),cutting a piece about 4"x6" and wrapping the handle with 2 or 3 tight wraps and gluing it down with Weldwood contact cement. If done neatly,it can make for a REAL comfortable and fairly ok looking alternative to a new one. Of course just about any style handle can be had brand new at luggage stores or any chain music store like Guitar Center,Sam Ash,etc for around $20. I recently broke the handle on my Sierra case(carpet covered Cushcase)and I found that the handle for a Marshall amp head was the same size and found one at an Amp repair shop here in the San Fernando Valley. -MJ-
