What would you do ?

Post by James Quackenbush »

I have a couple of D-10 steels that are great steels, but I don't play C6...I don't know if I ever will, but I am thinking about going to either a U-12 or an Extended 12 or maybe even an Extended 10...I'd like to stay with a single neck with a D-10 or one a little smaller with a pad..Right now I'm playing the E9 neck only, and would like more pedals to setup different pulls with ...Thanks, Jim

If the D10's are collectable, like an old Emmons, ShoBud, ZB etc, then I wuld hesitate in parting with them. THink of them as an investment. If they are something that isn't as collectable (such as an older MSA etc, or even if they are a modern production steel, such as a Mullen, Fessenden etc, which are all good in their own right), see about doing a trade for a U12 etc).

I would start playing C6th..
heck..it's there..you're there...

sounds like a match to me...

The worst that can happen is that you'll stumble on to a few licks and have fun !

James if you're playing anything outside the country relm like jazz or swing it would be worth your wild to take some lessons on the 6th tuning. the guys are right who knows what a little time in the backyard could do and you have it right there. But if it's an issue of lighter weight to carry or something like that I would still go with some sort of 6th tuning(B6th) who knows someday you may want to play sugar moon or an old swing tune like that! It would be worth considering

I don't play C6th now, but am probably going to start working with it a little. I did have a Mooney E9th on the back neck, but have it tuned to B6th to kinda acquaint myself with the 6th type playing. Doing some non-pedal stuff with it just getting used to the tuning. Am picking up some strings while on my next leave and will set up C6th for sure then. My girlfriend is from Guam and wants me to play some "island" stuff for her, so that clinched it for me.

However, I am looking at next year going for a 14 string guitar as my 2nd guitar. Am working on a personalized tuning for it based around an extended E9th with an added 6th sorta like Big "E" has on his 12 string Carter. This will be my "hot rod" guitar while my ol' Black LeGrande (Charlene I call her) will stay right by my side.!

Just my $0.02 worth.

Hey, like Jeff Newman says, you're carrying the C6 neck with you anyway, you might as well learn to play it! Image I got some of his C6 videos and they've opened a lot of doors for me. <FONT SIZE=1 COLOR="#8e236b"><p align=CENTER>[This message was edited by David Mullis on 22 May 2003 at 08:53 AM.]</p></FONT>

I can't keep my hands of the C6 long enough to like the E9.
There are so many cool things on it for any style.
Besides if you get a universal all of a sudden., omagawd B6 in your face. Might as well start using C6.

Hey, also look at the C6th modal thread in none peddlers and Denny Turners very clear site on explaining C6 modes. His charts will go a long way to opening it up for you.
It fits right in the center of the 10 string neck.<FONT SIZE=1 COLOR="#8e236b"><p align=CENTER>[This message was edited by David L. Donald on 22 May 2003 at 10:43 AM.]</p></FONT>

i discovered C6 3 years ago and have'nt been able to cut it loose since Image
it's a darn shame to have 2 necks and only play on 1
E9 is Kool but C6 is Hipper Image Play Both
so are those 12/13/14 stringers too !
Better Today than Tamari ! Image
