Advice for Newbie!

Post by Paul MacNabb »

Hi folks, I am new to pedal steel playing, matter of fact so new that I don't even own one yet!
While I'm shopping for an S-10 I thought I might get some advice on where to start with instruction. Local lessons might be possible but also interested in books, DVD, etc.
If you had to pick one book or dvd to start off with as a beginner what would it be?
Thanks in advance!

Hi Paul

http://www.steelguitarshopper.com/categ ... struction/ <<, that is the link to the forum store. I bet a lot of people will recommend Winnie Winston's book and the Mel Bay Deluxe Pedal steel Method and for good reasons. Also Check out Mickey Adams youtubes http://www.youtube.com/user/Singlpilot Mickey also has an instruction book for sale that I would bet is pretty extensive. You can contact him here on the forum

Thank you Chuck! I had thought the Winnie Winston book might be a good place to start.

Here is a link to Mickey's book, which also comes with a video disc. I have it, and it is chock full of info.

I may, in fact, be nuts. However, I am screwed onto the right bolt... Jesus!

The Winston book, the Seymour and Adams videos, and the Mark Van Allen theory book
2 pedal steels, a lapStrat, and an 8-string Dobro (and 3 ukes)
More amps than guitars, and not many effects

If I could only have one? Yeah, then I guess probably the WW book, but don't get caught up on Streets of Laredo for too long - you're going to have to get past it and come back to it later to really get it. Even WW said that was his one regret.

However, I can't believe no one has mentioned this: http://www.jeffran.com/

Another really great resource - and free - are these:
http://www.sierrasteels.com/lessons/e9th-lessons.html

https://www.pedalsteel.com/joe/Members/tea/teach.html

Though, these are not exactly raw beginner material if you could only have one book.

Another I hear raves about, but don't own myself, is Scotty's (DeWitt Scott's) PSG Anthology.
