I have gone all over the map lusting over various steels guitars...decided I cant really afford an Emmons and dont have enough knowledge to deal with an old Sho Bud. So this is what I came up with:

The formica work was done by my good friend Joe Naylor of steel seats, and the wrapper plates and trays were done by my pal Dale Hansen of Bessdang Gizmos. I bought the fretboards off of ebay from someone who had them made for his GFI...they dont show up too well, but the fretboards are white with the red and black card suit markers like the old "buds". The "Emmons" plate is a joke and I in no way want to disrespect GFI as this is a great steel...I just told everyone that I would sound better on an Emmons...haha..of course I wouldnt ! I am very pleased with the way it turned out...probably not everyone will agree, but it is different !

Cool Larry. So you changed just the front apron and pedal bar mica?
If you like it and it makes you feel better about playing it, that's the main thing.
I vinyl wrapped a couple of my own steels. The way they look is more appealing to me and I find I spend more time sitting behind them because they are more visually pleasing.
Make 'em suit you, your gear, your prerogative.
Hope you're not one affected by the OK weather devastation. |

Jerry I re-did the front and back of the steel as well as the pedal bar.
Maybe you can see the fret board better from this photo. That was Memorial Day so the Red, White and Blue had a little more meaning.

Larry did not get my back yard just the steel. That is our back yard with patio tiles and a water feature (I call it a Gold Fish Pond)

There are a lot of ideas for the Formica, such as "drum wrap". Some of that stuff is really pretty (and some of it really wild!.

Adrian that is a 2 step process first I will have to make it to a ferrari and Maserati so I can charge you double. 
And Yes there are lots of options in the mica - some look and some not my taste....... but must be someones taste.

Joe, in that case, I would prefer a Ferrari.
I must say , need courage to do this, not for the inexperienced or faint hearted.
Was the original formica removed or new one glued over the original? |

I removed to original blue mica cleaned the old glue out of the grove down to the bare aluminum. So it would look right and like it came from the factory that way.
Fit the mica to length. Glued the new in place and with some polishing he was go.
I someone wanted to change out the top as well that would be a much biger project but do-able.

The guitar looks great, Larry. Great choice, going with the red mica... Though, if t'were me, I'd have gone out and cobbed a Rolls Royce emblem to stick on it...

Thanks Daniel - I try to make any of them look as good as possisble.
That I what I think helps me with steelseats. I try to make what the customers want and are happy to have in a seat.
I learned that customer service and satisfaction makes a company grow more than advertizing.
