Post by Russell Adkins »

Im looking into buying a brand new double neck pedal steel , Was wondering if some of you could give me some insight on which one to buy and why you think it might be a good purchase , if its heavy that's fine , im looking for best sounding guitars good looks and play ability, I like an all wood cabinet although a mica might do it for me if its especially nice , anyway I just thought id get some opinions . thanks Russ

Make a circular list of all the current pedal steel manufacturers, stick it on the wall, blindfold yourself, and throw a dart at it.

Nowadays, they're all interchangeable, most of the development work has been done, the teething troubles have been sorted out, and, like the bicycle, the pedal steel guitar is what's known as a 'mature design'

You will get lots of responses, and they will no doubt be according to what their particular preference is and what they play themselves. For me, I have owned 4 different brands, and I have setteled on the Mullen as my choice. But like I said, that is just my preference. You will get many different opinions. Good luck with your choice. If you're rich go with an Emmons or A Zum.Prices range from really expensive to dirt cheap on most brands so it's a matter of choice & pocket $$$$$$$$ :D

Or, whether you are rich or not, and want a steel guitar that will meet all of your requirements, buy a Carter, the working musician's best buy.

my opinion is don't buy new. there are lots of 'like new' steels for sale at half the price. since you don't know what you want, i'd recommend a great carter also. it'll save you twice the money and you'll have a great steel.

later down the road you'll have more experience and you'll know what you want.

of course i don't suppose you'll listen to my wisdom, since price seems to be no object in your original post.
as for new untested models i'd be curious to try an infinity steel.

Jackson Steel makes good steels too-they've got a doubleneck Pro IV and the Shot Jackson Commemorative model, and there was one called the Madison '63. There are so many great steel brands out there
