Most popular road steels?
I'm looking to purchase a new steel which I plan to use exclusively for gigs and I was wondering if there is a preferred brand that todays road players use. And on the other hand are there brands less suitable for the rigors of the road.

Companies like Derby, Emmons, Franklin GFI, Jackson, Mullen, and Zumsteel are used on the road with artists today. There's guys like Chad Jeffers playing his Mullen G2 with Carrie Underwood, Jim Bob Gairrett playing his Mullen G2 with Kenny Chesney, Tim Sergent playing his Jackson Pro IV with Dierks Bentley,Denny Hemingson playing his Emmons on tour with Tim McGraw, and Mike Daily playing his Zumsteel on tour with George Strait, Robbie Flint plays his Derby with Alan Jackson, and Randle Currie plays his Franklin with Brad Paisley, and Norm Hamlet plays his GFI with Merle Haggard.

I have to echo what Mike said earlier. That is, most of the steels made now are great and you'll see lots of different ones in touring. It's not like any of the steels are bad.
So, what it boils down to is a player's personal preference and, that being said, most players recommend the steel that they're currently using. Put another way, I've never heard any player say, "I use a [insert brand name here] but I wouldn't recommend it."
