I'm going purely on visual the style of it. It seems at once modernistic yet traditionally Japanese. If that is possible.

DENNIS...Jeff Ah Hoy has mentioned many who play the CANOPUS in Hawai'i....and there are many ! It has a very strong solid tone, expensive....yes, but you only get what you pay for....right ? As for the tuning pan fitting into an old Fender, it would be worth a try to contact Yasu. He might be willing to supply one for you. Nothing ventured, nothing gained.

This one is my favorite, for two reasons. First I wanted one that sounds good, which this one does, with the ZumSteel pickup Bruce made to accomodate a 9 string guitar. Secondly, I wanted an instrument with the same string spacing as the standard pedal steel guitar. I got both things I wanted and therefore my favorite.

Geez, I guess my Pettingill Frying Pan Special because it has 2 wildly disparate pups in there that covers a lot of tonal landscape......and the steel is in Open E or E7 and it just rocks.

I can't say enough about how great it is to have 2 different pups in a steel, so long as they "get along".

My Favorite Vintage Lap Steel

My favorite for regular playing and recording is a Gibson EH 185 (v.1a) 7 string C.C. PU c. 1939 tuned to A6. It has excellent tone, palm and finger harmonics, and sustain.

this one.. not the original pickup.. which was very strange and cool, but sonically kind of a dud...

Great sounding guitar! C#-E-G-A-C-Eb (E)

If you don't already know my absolute favourite is the MSA Superslide 12 string. I just wish I could convince wife to let me make that purchase but every tin I save the money something always comes up.

Maybe one day.

Hopefully soon.

I would gladly be a walking endorsement for them just for one. The sound and playability and materials used and shape. Man Reece got it so right. RIP the legend in my opinion. Image[/img]

One of my homemades is my day to day steel, best sound and playability. Ive put a coil tapped humbucker in it so I could get the single coil sound but it sounds better as a humbucker. I have a few others but this is my C6th one which is my go to tuning

It says "lap steel" and for this I would go with my Melbert 8 string..great sound and looks. If you mean "non-pedal", then my Fender T8 stringmaster...it is the best sounding non-pedal I have owned and it looks so cool...has lots of character !

Fun question

Post by Barbara Berg »

Well, first I was in love with my 1956 Fender, that lasted a year until I saved up enough money to buy my 1946 B6, The tone is like a bell inside a metal room. How's that for a description Jack?

My recent favorite is my Bill Asher Alan Akaka Special 8. It has tone and sustain to die for! Other than that, it's my Canopus D8 I got from Greg Sardinha. The Asher travels a lot easier than a D8, and, because I use a high G C13 (from top G E C A G E Bb G), I can do a lot of B11 tunes (in C rather than A), especially if I tune the middle G to F#.

Man ... hard for me to pick one, but I'd have to go with this one. Its the second steel I ever made and one I still own and play regularly. I definitely should get some better updated pics taken as it has aged nicely and has a different pickup than in the pic.

Recovering from health setback I'm appreciating my light, little Carvin S-8. Can pick it up with a couple of fingers, sits lightly on my lap for home practice & sounds pretty good through a Roland 80 XL. Great thread. There are a lot of beauties out there.
