How many have a "beater steel" for playing in dive
Just curious how many of you have a steel just for the occasion of playing rough, rowdy, establishments where there is a good chance something or somebody might run, fall or land on your steel?
Post pictures of these steels if you like, and maybe we can vote for the one that looks like the best candidate for "The steel that has been through it and survived"
It seems that most steels pictured on the Forum are generally in fantastic beautiful shape, so how about using this as an occasion to toast some well worn and played steels that have survived years of use in a bar setting.

I have a few steels but, basically, I just take the same D10 p/p to every gig. It doesn't matter what kind of place it is. I've never been bothered by anyone, even at the lowest dive.
On the other hand, I keep a high-end steel set up at home to practice on. I probably woldnt take it out unless it was for a big, big show.n

On my local or in-Texas gigs I take my car to, I play one of my two Emmons wraparounds. On a travel gig that I need a D-10 for, I have a couple early 80's PP's that, though they're fine guitars and valuable, they're replaceable. On a fly date with Michael Martin Murphey, I have a mid-70's S-10 PP with Ray Allen lightweight legs that weighs under 50lbs to make the airlines happy.
My rig: Infinity and Telonics.
Son, we live in a world with walls, and those walls have to be guarded by men with steel guitars. Who's gonna do it? You? You, Lt. Weinberg?

I take my Emmons push pull, which alternates with my Zum. They are both mica finish, and I am reluctant to take my lacquer guitars to dives. This coming Saturday will be only the second live gig with my Show Pro, because I refuse to play it out unless there is a decent high stage in place.
Show Pro D10 - amber (8+6), MSA D10 Legend XL Signature - redburst (9+6), Infinity SD10 (4+5) Sho-Bud Pro 111 Custom (8+6), Emmons black Push-Pull D10 (8+5), Zum D10 (8x8), Hudson pedal resonator. Telonics TCA-500, Webb 614-E,

I'm with Mr. Ivey. While the next guitar is gonna have a lot of purty built in to it, it's still gonna be the guitar that goes to gigs. I'm not spending the kind of money I usually pay for cars (I buy them used) for something to sit in my living room. Will the first battle scar make me wince? Duhhh. These things were MEANT for barrooms.
2 pedal steels, a lapStrat, and an 8-string Dobro (and 3 ukes)
More amps than guitars, and not many effects

I'm with Lane. My instruments are meant to be played. I take one of my my Millenniums everywhere I play. Usually the pretty purple one.
If I'm concerned about the guitar's safety, I take the white one.
The paint on the carbon fiber pedal rack on the purple one has chipped a few times and needed to be retouched. The white one has an unpainted aluminum pedal rack. I don't need to worry about somebody accidentally crashing into it.

If memory serves, that's my old guitar. I sold it in Antioch CA around 1979 to fund my honeymoon. My wife had just given me a brand new D-10 black mica P/P w/ metal necks, so I thought I could live w/o this one......What a mistake that was. I finally bought a similarly beat up lacquer woody a year ago through Jim Palenscar.chris ivey wrote:

I tend to take my older 2001 Zum if the place is a bit dodgie ... although it is in pristine condition, I have never had anyone fall over it yet -- probably the last thing they will do as well :-} !

I had a drunk fall on my ZB many years ago despite many requests from me to back off. It took a right hander to get him away and he spent the rest of the evening sleeping it off in the corner of the room. In the meantime his ring had scratched the front of my guitar's apron. I was very p'd off as I look after my gear and there is no excuse for any punter to damage gear on a gig despite an earlier poster stating that it is fair wear and tear.
